Eight Causes of Reddit Search Not Working, and How to Find the Post AnywayEight Causes of Reddit Search Not Working, and How to Find the Post Anyway

Reddit search misses posts for reasons Reddit's own help pages document. The default Relevance sort can bury recent threads, a community pill limits results to one subreddit, comment search requires every word, Safe Search hides NSFW results, quarantined and private communities stay out of search, removed posts and blocked users disappear, old app versions misbehave, and Reddit itself can be down. Check each in order, sort by New with a time filter, and search comments separately. If you need every new mention, use keyword monitoring instead of repeat searches.

Why is Reddit search not finding a post you know exists?

Reddit's help centre documents eight causes of Reddit search not working, and only one of them involves Reddit being down. The other seven are sorts, filters and visibility rules that hide a post that still exists. Each has a fix you can apply in under a minute. Work through them in the order below before you assume the post is gone.

This page covers why search misses posts. For how to build good queries in the first place, see the full guide to Reddit search, and for operator syntax, Reddit search operators.

Why does Reddit search show old posts first?

Reddit search shows older or bigger posts first because the default sort is Relevance, which weighs votes, comments and post age alongside your words. Reddit's filters and sorts article says Relevance "factors in the relative rarity of each word (biasing towards words which are less common), age of the post, and number of votes and comments it has." A thread posted an hour ago with two comments loses to a popular thread from last year.

Switch the sort to New and set the time filter, which offers all time, past year, month, week, 24 hours and hour. Keep one catch in mind. The same article says "Relevance is the only sort that'll take into account how rare the words in your search are, so the other sorts might have results that match the most common word in your search at the top." Under New, a query like invoice software freelancers can fill up with posts that only match "software." Put the distinctive phrase in quotes or use a field filter such as title: to stop that.

Why does Reddit search only show one subreddit?

Reddit search shows one subreddit when you started the search from inside that community, because the community name sits in the search bar as a pill and scopes every query to it. Reddit's Available search features article says "that community name will appear as a pill in the search bar, indicating you can search the contents of that community. To change your scope to search all of Reddit, click Show results from all of Reddit."

The reverse mistake costs results too. A generic word searched across all of Reddit returns popular threads from big communities, and a niche thread sinks under them. If you know the subreddit, search inside it.

Why does Reddit comment search return nothing?

Reddit comment search returns nothing for long queries because comments must contain every word you typed, while posts only need some of them. The search features article says: "When searching posts, results only need to include some of your search words... However, when searching comments or users, results must currently include all of your search words."

A six-word question typed into comment search needs a comment containing all six words. Cut the query down to two or three distinctive words. To search inside one thread, use the comment search on the post itself: Reddit says to tap the search icon on a post in the apps, or click the search bar by the comments section on desktop. Comment search behaves differently enough that it deserves its own pass every time.

Check operator syntax too. Field filters break if you put a space after the colon. Reddit's example is author:cats working and author: cats failing.

A heavy padlock locking a metal gate, a picture of private and quarantined communities that search cannot open.

NSFW, quarantined and private posts stay out of search results by design, through Safe Search, quarantine rules and community privacy. Each needs a different fix.

Safe Search. Reddit says that if Safe Search is on, "you will only see Safe For Work (SFW) results." To see NSFW results, turn on "Show mature (18+) content" in your preferences, then turn Safe Search off. Reddit warns that switching the adult content toggle off and on again can reset Safe Search.

Quarantine. Reddit's Quarantined Communities article says quarantined communities "are not included in search or recommendations." The only way in is to visit the community directly and opt in to view it.

Private and restricted communities. Reddit's community type article says in a private community "Only people you approve can see and participate." Search will not return what you are not allowed to see.

Reddit's AI search follows similar rules. Its AI search article says the feature "excludes content from private, quarantined, and NSFW communities, as well as some mature topics." AI search is also a separate mode. Pressing Enter runs native search, while the Ask button returns an AI summary, so make sure you are reading the results you meant to request.

Why can't you find your own Reddit post in search?

You cannot find your own post when it sits low under the default sort, or when moderators or a spam filter removed it. Reddit's Why can't I see my post? article lists the causes in order: sort by new, check the community rules because "a moderator may have removed your post," check community karma because "there's a limit to how often users can post and comment in a community," and check whether Reddit is having an incident.

A removed post looks like a search bug to its author. The difference between a removed and a deleted post is laid out in removed vs deleted on Reddit. If every post and comment you make gets zero engagement across several subreddits, the account itself can be hidden, which is a separate test covered in the Reddit shadowban guide. If a moderator removed the post by mistake, Reddit's help centre says to send them a mod mail message.

Why do one person's posts never appear?

One person's posts never appear when one of you has blocked the other. Reddit's blocking article says that when you block someone, "their posts won't show up in any feeds, including the feeds of communities you visit." When someone blocks you, their posts and comments "will look like they've been deleted" to you, with the body replaced by an [unavailable] tag.

Check your blocked accounts list in settings. If the person blocked you, nothing on your side brings their content back.

Is Reddit search down, or is it your app?

Reddit search can fail because of a site incident or an outdated app, and you can rule out both quickly. Reddit's help centre points to redditstatus.com to "make sure Reddit is up and running as expected." Reddit's minimum versions article says users below the supported app or OS versions "may experience certain bugs within the Reddit app," and advises updating or switching to mobile web.

What should you do when Reddit search keeps missing threads?

When search keeps missing threads, run this order of checks, then decide whether search is the right tool at all:

  1. Check redditstatus.com for an incident.
  2. Remove the community pill, or add it if you know the subreddit.
  3. Sort by New and set a time filter.
  4. Run the same query against Posts and then against Comments, with fewer words for comments.
  5. Check Safe Search and your blocked list.
  6. Visit the subreddit directly if you suspect it is private or quarantined.

Search is a lookup tool. It answers "where is the thread I already know about." It is weak at "tell me about every new thread that mentions my problem," because Relevance favours old popular posts and New floods with partial matches. That second job is monitoring.

RedReplier does that job for Reddit, X, Bluesky, Facebook and Hacker News. It watches every public subreddit for the keywords you choose, and you can narrow it to specific communities. Matches land on your RedReplier dashboard within minutes of a post or comment going live, and email alerts go out as digests on a cadence you set per keyword, from hourly to daily. Reddit keyword monitoring ranks each match by buyer intent and drafts a reply, which you review, edit and post yourself. You stop depending on whether a thread ranks, because the match reaches you when it is posted.

Frequently asked questions

Why is Reddit search so bad at finding recent posts?

The default Relevance sort weighs votes, comments and post age, so new threads with little activity rank below older popular ones. Sort by New and set the time filter to past day or past week. Use quotes or a title: filter to stop common words from flooding the results.

Does Reddit search include comments?

Yes. Reddit search has a Comments content type alongside Posts, Communities, Media and People. Comment results must contain every word in your query, so keep comment searches short.

Why does Reddit search show nothing for a subreddit I can see?

Check whether the community is quarantined, which keeps it out of search entirely, or whether Safe Search is hiding NSFW results. A community pill in the search bar can also limit you to a different subreddit. Visiting the subreddit and searching from inside it fixes the scope problem.

Reddit's AI search article says mods currently have no way to exclude their community's content from search. Moderators can make a community private, which limits who can see it, and they can remove individual posts. Reddit itself keeps quarantined communities out of search.

Why does my post not show up when I search for its title?

Your post can sit far down the Relevance results, or a moderator or spam filter can have removed it. Sort by New, then check the subreddit from a logged-out browser. If it is missing there, read the community rules and contact the moderators through mod mail.

Is there an alternative to Reddit search for finding new mentions?

Keyword monitoring is the alternative, because it checks new posts and comments as they appear instead of waiting for you to search. Reddit offers its own Trends tool in Reddit Pro, and third-party tools such as RedReplier watch every public subreddit and deliver matches to a dashboard and email digests.

How do I search Reddit for posts from the last 24 hours?

Sort the results by New, then set the time filter to past 24 hours or past hour. The filter also offers all time, past year, month and week. Put the distinctive phrase in quotes, because under New the top results can match only the most common word in your query.

How do I turn off Safe Search on Reddit?

Turn on "Show mature (18+) content" in your preferences first, then turn Safe Search off. With Safe Search on, you only see Safe For Work results. Switching the adult content toggle off and on again can reset Safe Search.

How do I search inside a single Reddit thread?

Use the comment search on the post itself. In the apps, tap the search icon on the post. On desktop, click the search bar by the comments section.

Is Reddit search down right now?

Check redditstatus.com, which Reddit points to for confirming that the site is up and running as expected. If the status page is clear, update the Reddit app, since old app versions can cause bugs. Mobile web is the other option.
