TL;DR
7 min readTo search inside one subreddit, open the community and use the search bar, which Reddit scopes to that community and marks with a pill showing its name. From anywhere else, add the subreddit filter to your query, as in subreddit:SaaS pricing. On old Reddit, tick "limit my search to r/name", which sends restrict_sr with the query, and the Data API takes the same restrict_sr flag. Posts sort by relevance, hot, top, new or comment count, with a time filter from past hour to all time, and comments sort by relevance, top and new. Sort by new to find threads you can still answer.
How do you search a subreddit?
To search subreddit content, open the community page and type into the search bar, because Reddit scopes that search to the community you are browsing. Reddit's Available search features article says "that community name will appear as a pill in the search bar, indicating you can search the contents of that community." If you are not on the community page, add subreddit:name to your query instead.
Reddit's How does Reddit search work? article puts it in one line: "If you only want to get results within a specific community, simply use the search bar when you're on the community page." The scope holds until you remove it. Reddit's wording for widening it again is "click Show results from all of Reddit."

How do you search a subreddit on desktop, the app and old Reddit?
Each version of Reddit scopes a search to one community in a different way. All of them end on a results page limited to that subreddit.
| Where | How to scope the search | What changes it back |
|---|---|---|
| reddit.com | Search from the community page, where a pill with the community name sits in the search bar | Show results from all of Reddit |
| iOS and Android apps | Tap the search bar on the community page; Reddit says you can also "view posts and comments by flair" from there | Remove the community scope |
| Old Reddit | Tick the "limit my search to r/name" checkbox under the search box | Untick it |
| Any search box | Type subreddit:name with your terms | Delete the filter |
| Data API | Call GET /r/{subreddit}/search with restrict_sr set | Leave restrict_sr off |
The old Reddit checkbox label comes from Reddit's open-source code, last pushed to reddit-archive/reddit in 2017. The search form template renders a checkbox named restrict_sr with the label "limit my search to" followed by the community path, and it only appears when you are inside a community. A ticked checkbox submits restrict_sr=on, so an old Reddit URL such as old.reddit.com/r/SaaS/search?q=pricing&restrict_sr=on searches r/SaaS only. Old Reddit search now sends logged-out visitors to a login page, which we confirmed on 9 October 2026, so sign in first.
One filter disappears inside a community. Reddit's search article lists five result types, posts, communities, comments, media and people, and notes that the people filter "is not available if you're searching within a community."
How does the subreddit: operator work?
The subreddit: operator limits results to posts from the community you name, and it works from any search box, including Reddit's front page. Reddit's Available search features article lists it among its manual filtering words with the definition "The submission's subreddit" and the example subreddit:cats.
Three rules from the same article decide whether the query works:
- No space after the colon. Reddit shows
author:catsas correct andauthor: catsas wrong, and the same applies tosubreddit:. - Filters stack. Reddit's own example is
author:reddit subreddit:reddit search updates, which finds posts about search updates by u/reddit in r/reddit. - Quote multi-word values. Reddit says to "wrap the query in double or single quotes" for a multi-word field search, as in
title:"kitten gif".
The operator and the community search bar reach the same place by different routes. The search bar is faster when you are already in the community. The operator is better when you keep a list of saved queries, because the scope travels with the text. Our guide to Reddit search operators lists the other seven filters Reddit documents, including title, selftext and flair.
What does restrict_sr do?
The restrict_sr parameter tells Reddit's search to return results from the current subreddit only. Reddit's API reference documents it on GET [/r/subreddit]/search as a "boolean value" next to the other search parameters. Reddit's 2017 open-source code shows why it matters: restrict_sr defaults to false, and when it is false the search handler swaps the subreddit for the default site-wide scope. A request to /r/SaaS/search without the flag searched all of Reddit.
The same reference sets the limits a script works within:
| Parameter | Documented value |
|---|---|
q | A string no longer than 512 characters |
restrict_sr | Boolean, limits results to the subreddit in the path |
sort | relevance, hot, top, new, comments |
t | hour, day, week, month, year, all |
limit | Default 25, maximum 100 |
The 512-character cap on q counts the subreddit: filter and every quoted phrase. When a query with a product, its competitors and several intent phrases passes that cap, split it into two narrower queries.
- Request goes to /r/SaaS/search
- The handler swaps the subreddit for the default site-wide scope
- Results come from all of Reddit
- Same request to /r/SaaS/search
- Results are limited to the subreddit in the path
- Old Reddit sends restrict_sr=on when the box is ticked
How should you sort results inside a subreddit?
Sort by New when you are looking for questions to answer, and by Top or Relevance when you are researching what a community already said. Reddit's What filters and sorts are available? article lists five post sorts and a time filter.
- Relevance is the default and "factors in the relative rarity of each word," plus the post's age, votes and comments.
- Hot "prioritizes posts that have recently been getting upvotes, comments, etc."
- Top "prioritizes posts that have all-time high upvote numbers and comments" and takes a time filter.
- New "prioritizes the newest posts, regardless of upvotes and comments."
- Comment Count puts the posts with the most comments first.
The time filter covers "all time, past year, month, week, 24 hours, and hour." Comment results sort by Relevance, Top and New only. How these orders work under the hood is covered in Reddit hot vs new vs top.
Matching differs between tabs. Reddit's search article says that when searching posts, "results only need to include some of your search words," while comment and user results "must currently include all of your search words." Quote a phrase in post search when you want every word to match.

How do you find leads with a subreddit search?
You find leads with a subreddit search by scoping to a community where your buyers ask questions, searching for the words people use when they ask for help, and sorting by New. The steps:
- Pick the community first. Our guide to best subreddits for marketing covers how to judge one.
- Search for intent phrases, not your brand:
"alternative to","recommend","what do you use for". - Sort by New and set the time filter to past week, so every result is a thread that is still open.
- Switch to the Comments tab. Recommendation requests also arrive as replies under someone else's post.
- Read the community's rules before you reply, then write the answer yourself.
A search only answers when you run it. Rerunning ten community searches every morning is the point where most people stop searching by hand. The full routine, from picking communities to reading results, is in our longer guide to Reddit search.
How does RedReplier replace repeated subreddit searches?
RedReplier runs the search for you. It watches every public subreddit for the keywords you target, and you can narrow it to specific communities, which is the monitoring version of a subreddit: filter. Matches land on your RedReplier dashboard within minutes of a post or comment going live, and email alerts go out as digests on a cadence you set per keyword, from hourly to daily. Each match keeps its subreddit and thread attached, ranked by buyer intent, and RedReplier drafts a reply that you review, edit and post yourself, since it never posts for you. The setup is on the Reddit keyword monitoring page.
Frequently asked questions
How do I search only one subreddit on Reddit?
Open the community and use the search bar, which shows a pill with the community name while the search is scoped. From anywhere else, add subreddit:name to the query with no space after the colon.
How do I search a subreddit on old Reddit?
Open the subreddit, type your query and tick "limit my search to r/name" under the search box. That checkbox sends restrict_sr=on. Old Reddit search asks logged-out visitors to sign in first.
Can I search a subreddit's comments?
Yes. Search from the community and switch to the Comments tab. Comment results must include all of your search words and sort by Relevance, Top or New.
Why can't I find people when searching inside a subreddit?
Reddit's help centre says the people filter "is not available if you're searching within a community." Widen the search to all of Reddit, or use author:username with the subreddit: filter.
Can I search a subreddit by date?
Only through the time filter, which covers past hour, 24 hours, week, month, year and all time. Reddit's interface and API offer no custom date range.
Can I search several subreddits at once?
Reddit's help centre says you can search "specific communities or custom feeds," so a custom feed that holds several subreddits gives you one scoped search across them. Run the search from the custom feed's page, the same way you would from a community.
How do I sort a subreddit search by newest posts?
Open the community, run your search and pick New from the sort menu. Reddit says New "prioritizes the newest posts, regardless of upvotes and comments." Add the past week time filter and every result is a thread that is still open for replies.
Why does my subreddit search show results from all of Reddit?
Reddit scopes a search to a community only when you start from the community page or send the scope with the query. If you clicked "Show results from all of Reddit", the scope is gone. On old Reddit, tick "limit my search to r/name". In the API, restrict_sr defaults to false, so a request to /r/SaaS/search without it searches all of Reddit.
Why do some subreddit search results miss my keywords?
Post search only needs some of your search words, so a result can match one term and skip the rest. Wrap a phrase in double or single quotes when every word must match. Comment search is stricter and requires all of your search words.
How long can a Reddit search query be?
The Data API caps the q parameter at 512 characters, and the subreddit: filter and every quoted phrase count toward that limit. If a query with a product, its competitors and several intent phrases goes over, split it into two narrower queries. The same API returns 25 results by default and 100 at most per request.
