TL;DR
6 min readReddit gives you two ways to search by flair. Type flair:value, which Reddit documents as matching "the text of the link flair on the post", or tap a flair tag on a post, which opens every post carrying that flair. On reddit.com, that tap builds a feed URL with f=flair_name:"Flair text", a parameter Reddit's help centre does not document. Flair search only works on post flair, only means something inside one community, and misses every post that was never flaired. Pair flair:Question or flair:Help with a subreddit filter and sort by new to find open questions in your niche.
How does Reddit search by flair work?
The quickest Reddit search by flair is a tap on a flair tag, and the typed version is the flair: filter, which Reddit documents as matching "the text of the link flair on the post." Both return posts that a community filed under one label, such as Question, Help or Showcase. Use the tap when you are browsing a community and the filter when you want to save the query or combine it with other terms.
Reddit's Available search features article covers both routes. Under "Flair search" it says: "If you're on our native mobile apps and see flair tags on posts, try tapping one! It'll take you to all of the posts with that flair." Under "Manual filtering" it lists flair next to author, subreddit, title and the other filters, with the example flair:cats.
What is the flair: syntax Reddit documents?
The flair: syntax is the word flair, a colon and the flair text, with no space in between. Reddit's article shows the spacing rule with another filter, author:cats as right and author: cats as wrong, and it applies to every manual filter.
| Query | What it returns |
|---|---|
flair:Question | Posts whose link flair text matches Question, across Reddit |
flair:Question subreddit:SaaS | Posts flaired Question in r/SaaS |
flair:"Feature Request" | Posts with a two-word flair; Reddit says to wrap multi-word values in "double or single quotes" |
flair:Question AND alternative | Posts flaired Question that contain alternative, using Reddit's case-sensitive AND |
Reddit's article states that filters stack, with the example cats subreddit:pics site:imgur.com. Add subreddit: to every flair query, because flair text is set by each community's moderators, and a Question flair in one subreddit has nothing to do with a Question flair in another. The full list of filters Reddit documents is in our guide to Reddit search operators.
What does flair_name: mean in a Reddit URL?
flair_name: is the form reddit.com puts in the address bar when you click a flair, and Reddit's help centre does not document it as a search filter. We checked r/SaaS on 9 October 2026. Each post's flair tag linked to a URL of the form /r/SaaS/?f=flair_name%3A%22B2B%20SaaS%22, which decodes to f=flair_name:"B2B SaaS". That URL opens the community feed filtered to the flair, not the search page.
Reddit's moderator article on Post Flair describes the click itself: "Clicking on post flair in a post listing will bring you to a search result page that displays all posts that have been assigned that particular flair." The parameter behind it is an implementation detail. Use the URL as a bookmark for one community's flaired feed, and use the documented flair: filter in queries you type or save, since Reddit can change an undocumented parameter without notice.

How do you search by flair inside one community?
You search by flair inside one community in four ways: tap a flair tag, use the community's flair navigation menu, browse by flair from the community search bar, or type flair: into that search bar.
- Tap a flair tag on any post. On the apps and on reddit.com, this opens the posts that carry that flair.
- Use flair navigation, where the community has it. The Post Flair article describes a "horizontal flair navigation menu below your community info" that moderators can switch on. "Flair in the navigation is sorted by the most used, and posts within each flair are sorted by new."
- Search from the community page. Reddit's search article says that inside a community "you can also tap the search bar in the community page and view posts and comments by flair."
- Type the filter.
flair:Questionin the community search bar, orflair:Question subreddit:namefrom anywhere else.
Flair navigation sorting by new is useful for anyone looking for questions to answer, because the newest flaired post is the one still waiting for replies.
What are the limits of searching Reddit by flair?
Flair search has five limits, and each one hides posts worth answering.
- It only matches post flair. Reddit defines
flairas "the text of the link flair on the post." User flair, the label next to a username, is a separate system and the filter does not search it. - Unflaired posts drop out. Flair is optional unless the community requires it. A post with no flair never matches a
flair:query, however good the question. - Flair text is local. Each community names its own flairs, and the Post Flair article allows up to 350 templates per community. "Question" in one subreddit is "Help" or "Ask" in the next.
- Post search matches loosely. Reddit's search article says that in post search "results only need to include some of your search words, unless you use the special syntax above to force an exact match." Quote a multi-word flair.
- Navigation is optional. Moderators choose whether to turn on flair navigation, so not every community shows the menu.
Reddit's API reference caps a search query at 512 characters, which includes every flair: and subreddit: filter in it.

How do you use flair search to find people asking for help?
You use flair search to find people asking for help by scoping to a community where your buyers post, filtering to the flair the community uses for questions, and sorting by New. Look at the flair list in the community first, then build the query on the label its members use.
- Open the community and note the flair it uses for questions or requests, such as Question, Help, Recommendation or Advice.
- Search
flair:Question subreddit:name, swapping in that community's label. - Add an intent phrase if the flair is busy, such as
flair:Question "alternative to". - Sort by New and set the time filter to past week. Our explainer on Reddit hot vs new vs top covers why New is the sort for open threads.
- Read the community's rules before you answer, and reply in the thread yourself.
Flair queries are a good start and a poor routine. Each one covers one community, and you have to rerun it to see anything new. Our guide to Reddit search covers the wider workflow.
How does RedReplier fit with flair search?
RedReplier watches every public subreddit for the keywords you set, and you can narrow it to specific communities, so a question reaches you whether or not its author picked a flair. Matches land on your RedReplier dashboard within minutes of a post or comment going live, and email alerts go out as digests on a cadence you set per keyword, from hourly to daily. RedReplier's subreddit suggestions rank communities by fit with what you sell and flag each one's posting rules with an ok-to-post or avoid badge, which tells you where a reply is welcome before you search those communities' flairs. RedReplier drafts a reply for each match and never posts it for you.

Frequently asked questions
How do I search Reddit by flair?
Type flair: followed by the flair text, with no space after the colon, and add subreddit:name to keep it to one community. On the apps or reddit.com you can also tap a flair tag on any post to open all posts with that flair.
What is the difference between flair: and flair_name:?
flair: is the search filter Reddit documents in its help centre. flair_name: appears in the f= parameter of the feed URL reddit.com builds when you click a flair. Reddit does not document flair_name:, so use flair: in queries you save.
How do I search a flair with two words?
Wrap the flair text in quotes, as in flair:"Feature Request". Reddit's help centre says multi-word field searches take double or single quotes.
Can I search Reddit by user flair?
No. Reddit defines the flair filter as the text of the link flair on the post, which is post flair. Reddit's search documentation describes no filter for user flair.
Why does my flair search miss posts?
The post has no flair, the community uses a different label, or the query is not scoped to the right subreddit. Check the community's flair list and rerun the search with its exact flair text.
Does flair search work across all of Reddit?
It runs across all of Reddit if you leave out subreddit:, but the results mix unrelated communities that happen to share a flair name. Add subreddit:name so the flair means what you expect.
How do I find unanswered questions on Reddit with flair?
Scope the search to a community where your buyers post, then search flair:Question subreddit:name using the label that community uses for questions. Sort by New and set the time filter to past week. The newest flaired post is the one still waiting for replies.
Can I bookmark a Reddit flair search?
You can bookmark the feed URL that reddit.com builds when you click a flair, which opens one community's flaired posts. Reddit does not document the f=flair_name: parameter in that URL, so it can change without notice. For a query you rely on, save the documented flair: filter instead.
How many post flairs can a subreddit have?
Reddit's Post Flair article allows up to 350 templates per community. Moderators choose the names, so Question in one subreddit may be Help or Ask in another. Check the community's own flair list before you build a query.
How do I combine a flair search with a keyword?
Put the keyword after the flair filter, as in flair:Question "alternative to". You can also use Reddit's case-sensitive AND, as in flair:Question AND alternative. Quote any multi-word phrase so Reddit does not match its words loosely.
