TL;DR
7 min readA sitewide Reddit shadowban hides your posts, comments and profile from everyone but you, and Reddit's admins are the only people who can lift it. Load reddit.com/user/YOURNAME in a logged-out browser window: a 404 means shadowbanned, a suspension notice means suspended, and a normal profile means the problem is a single subreddit's moderators or filters instead.
What is a Reddit shadowban?
A sitewide Reddit shadowban hides your posts and comments from everyone else while they still look normal to you, and the fastest test is loading your own profile URL in a logged-out browser window. Reddit's admins apply the flag to the whole account, so it follows you into every subreddit instead of sitting inside one community's rules. Run the logged-out check before you blame a moderator, because the two problems have different fixes.
Reddit's help center never prints the word shadowban. Its closest article, My account was flagged for spam or inauthentic activity, describes the symptom precisely: "If your posts, comments, chat messages, and profile page aren't showing up as expected, your account might've been flagged for spam or inauthentic activity." I checked it in September 2026 and it still points at one remedy, the appeal form. That is the whole of Reddit's documentation, which is why the community fills the gap.
How do you check for a Reddit shadowban in thirty seconds?
Open a browser window where you are not logged in and load https://www.reddit.com/user/YOURUSERNAME, swapping in your handle without the u/ prefix. A healthy account renders its profile, karma and recent posts. A shadowbanned account returns a 404 or the line "nobody here goes by that name", because Reddit serves your account to strangers as if it was never created. A suspended account renders a page saying the account is suspended, a different status with a different appeal.
The moderators of r/ShadowBan, a 225,000-member community that maintains the most-cited unofficial guide to this, publish a second test in their Detecting a Shadowban wiki: log in, then open https://www.reddit.com/appeal. An account in good standing sees a note saying it cannot appeal at this time. An account carrying a restriction gets a working appeal form. Turn off content blockers first, which those moderators call out by name, because a blocked script is the most common reason this test reads as inconclusive.
Keep the logged-out profile test as your primary check. It works on anyone's username, so you can also confirm whether the person who ignored your reply is shadowbanned.

How does a shadowban differ from a subreddit ban, an AutoMod removal and a spam filter hold?
Only a sitewide shadowban makes your profile vanish for logged-out visitors. The other four states leave your account visible and act on one post, one community, or your ability to log in, and each leaves a different fingerprint. Confusing a shadowban with "AutoMod ate my post" is the mistake that sends people to the appeal form when the real fix is a two-line modmail.
| Status | What the poster sees | What everyone else sees | How to check | Who lifts it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sitewide shadowban | Posts submit normally and sit on your own profile, but replies and karma stop arriving | Nothing. The profile 404s and the content is absent from every feed, search and thread | Load your profile URL logged out | Reddit admins, via reddit.com/appeal |
| Subreddit ban | A modmail from that community, and a block when you post there again | Your older content stays up; nothing new appears there | Try to post, then check modmail | That subreddit's mod team |
| AutoModerator removal | The post sits on your profile but is missing from the subreddit's new feed, sometimes with a bot reply | Nothing in the subreddit | Open the post's permalink logged out | The subreddit's mods, by approving it |
| Spam or safety filter hold | The same silence as an AutoMod removal, with no bot reply | Nothing until a mod approves it | Logged-out check on the post URL, then ask in modmail | Any mod clearing the queue |
| Account suspension | A notification and a banner, and you cannot post anywhere | A profile page stating the account is suspended | Load the profile logged out, then read your inbox | Reddit admins, via appeal |
AutoModerator is a per-community tool, not a sitewide judge. Reddit's Automoderator documentation says every community gets it by default and moderators write its rules on a wiki page, with action: remove deleting a post outright and action: filter parking it in the mod queue for a human. It acts only on new posts, comments, reports and edits, and it cannot react to karma or a redditor's history.
The filter side is separate again. Reddit's Safety Filters article documents a ban evasion filter, Crowd Control, an adult content promoters filter, a harassment filter, and a reputation filter driven by the Contributor Quality Score. Each one holds content for a mod to review instead of deleting it. None of it touches your account elsewhere on the site, which is the whole distinction. Our note on the Reddit spam filter covers the queue side.
Why does Reddit shadowban accounts?
Reddit's admins flag accounts for spam or inauthentic activity, and the help center names those two categories and nothing else. Underneath sits the Contributor Quality Score, a five-tier classification from Highest to Lowest built from past actions on the account, network and location signals, and whether the account verified an email. Verify your email, stop posting the same link into ten subreddits in an hour, and stop making new accounts every time one gets restricted.
Ban evasion and vote manipulation land in the same bucket. Reddit detects suspected ban evaders from how accounts connect to the site, which is why a new account on the same connection as a banned one starts life in trouble. Coordinated voting and comment raids carry the same risk, as our piece on brigading explains.

How do you get a Reddit shadowban lifted?
Log in to the affected account, open reddit.com/appeal, and submit the form. Reddit's help center gives those three steps and stops there. The r/ShadowBan moderators add the detail in their Appealing a Shadowban wiki: the ban holds until an admin lifts it, repeat the appeal at most once every 24 hours, and expect multiple attempts across days or weeks. They also warn that a reply reading "We have reviewed your account and lifted the restriction(s) on it" is automated, so recheck your profile logged out before you celebrate.
Every other status has a cheaper fix. A subreddit ban is answered by replying to the modmail, an AutoMod removal by rereading the sidebar and messaging the mods. A filter hold clears when a mod works the queue, and Reddit's own guidance in Why can't I see my post? is to earn a little karma inside that community first, which is what our Reddit karma requirements page covers. A suspension follows its own appeal path, described in our Reddit account suspension entry.
How do you avoid a shadowban while promoting a product?
Post like a member of the community and the flag never fires. The accounts that get caught share a shape: created last week, no comment history, the same domain dropped into unrelated subreddits, no verified email. Reddit reads all four as one signal, so fix them together, and read the Reddit self-promotion rule before your first link.

Frequently asked questions
Does Reddit still shadowban accounts?
Yes. Reddit's help center avoids the word, but its article "My account was flagged for spam or inauthentic activity" describes the exact behavior, an account whose posts, comments, chat messages and profile page stop showing up, and routes you to reddit.com/appeal. The mechanism has not gone away, only the label.
How long does a Reddit shadowban last?
Until an admin lifts it. The r/ShadowBan moderators state plainly that the ban holds unless you appeal successfully, and that appeals take multiple attempts over days or weeks. No waiting period clears it on its own, so an abandoned account stays shadowbanned.
Can a moderator shadowban you from one subreddit?
No. Only Reddit admins can hide an account sitewide. A mod team can ban you from their community, configure AutoModerator to remove or filter your posts there, and turn on safety filters that hold your content for review. Each of those is visible to you in some form, and none touches your profile anywhere else on Reddit.
My post vanished but my profile loads fine. What happened?
A moderator, AutoModerator or a filter acted on that one post. Open its permalink in a logged-out window. If the post is gone there but your profile is intact, the problem is community-level. Reddit's own troubleshooting lists two innocent causes as well, sorting a busy subreddit by hot instead of new, and a site incident you can confirm at redditstatus.com.
Does deleting and reposting fix a shadowban?
No, and it makes things worse. A shadowban applies to the account, so every repost is hidden the same way, and rapid repeat submissions are one of the patterns Reddit reads as spam. Appeal once, wait 24 hours, then recheck your profile in a logged-out window.
Should I make a new account instead of appealing?
No. Reddit detects suspected ban evasion from how accounts connect to the site, so a replacement account created on the same connection inherits the problem and risks a full suspension. Fix the original account through the appeal form, verify your email, and build comment history before you post links again.
Why do my own posts still look normal while I'm shadowbanned?
Reddit hides shadowbanned content from everyone except the account holder, so posts still submit normally and sit on your own profile while you're logged in. Replies and karma simply stop arriving, which is easy to miss if you never check your account from outside it. That's why the useful test is loading your profile URL in a logged-out window instead of judging by how your own feed looks.
Is r/ShadowBan an official Reddit resource?
It isn't an official Reddit resource. r/ShadowBan is a 225,000-member community whose moderators wrote the detecting and appealing wikis cited above, filling a gap Reddit's own help center leaves open since that center never prints the word shadowban and just routes people to the appeal form.
Can I check whether someone else's account is shadowbanned?
The logged-out profile test works on any username, not only your own. Load reddit.com/user/ followed by their handle in a browser where you're signed out; a 404 or "nobody here goes by that name" means they're shadowbanned, and a normal profile means something else explains their silence. It's a quick way to check the account of someone who stopped replying to you.
What is the Contributor Quality Score?
It's Reddit's five-tier classification, running from Highest to Lowest, built from an account's past actions, network and location signals, and whether the email address is verified. A low score sits underneath the spam or inauthentic-activity flag that triggers a shadowban, so verifying your email and dropping the habit of cross-posting the same link work directly against it.
