TL;DR
7 min readReddit's own search has no date range field. It offers a time filter of past hour, 24 hours, week, month, year and all time, and five sorts, of which New is the one that puts the latest posts first. For an exact range, use Google with site:reddit.com and the after: and before: operators, or the Arctic Shift archive, which filters by the time a post was made. To find threads you can still answer, search inside one community, sort by New and set the filter to the past week.
How do you search Reddit by date?
To search Reddit by date inside Reddit itself, run a search, then set the time filter to past hour, past 24 hours, past week, past month, past year or all time. Reddit's help article What filters and sorts are available? lists exactly those six windows: "you can filter by all time, past year, month, week, 24 hours, and hour." Every window ends now. There is no field for a start date, an end date or a single day last March.
So the honest answer has two halves. For "what did people say this week", Reddit's filter does the job in two clicks. For "what did people say between 1 and 15 June", Reddit's own search cannot answer, and you need one of the outside routes further down.
| What you want | Works in Reddit search? | What to use |
|---|---|---|
| Posts from the last hour, day, week, month or year | Yes | The time filter |
| Newest posts first, any age | Yes | The New sort |
| Posts between two specific dates | No | Google with after: and before:, or Arctic Shift |
| Posts from one exact day | No | Google or Arctic Shift with a one-day range |
| A date operator typed into the search box | No | None exists in Reddit's documentation |
Which sorts and time filters does Reddit search offer?
Reddit search offers five sorts for posts (Relevance, Hot, Top, New and Comment Count) plus the six-step time filter, and comment results get three sorts: Relevance, Top and New. Relevance is the default, and Reddit says it "factors in the relative rarity of each word (biasing towards words which are less common), age of the post, and number of votes and comments it has." Age is one input among several, so a popular two-year-old thread can outrank yesterday's question.
New is the only sort that orders strictly by time. Reddit's description reads: "This sort prioritizes the newest posts, regardless of upvotes and comments." When the job is finding conversations you can still join, New plus a short time window is the combination to reach for. The differences between Hot, New and Top on feeds are covered in Reddit hot vs new vs top.
The same controls exist in the API. Reddit's API reference gives GET /search a sort parameter, "one of (relevance, hot, top, new, comments)", and a t parameter, "one of (hour, day, week, month, year, all)". Neither accepts a date. A script that calls the API faces the same rolling windows as a person clicking the dropdown.

Can you search Reddit for an exact date range?
Reddit's own search cannot return an exact date range, because Reddit documents no date operator for the search box and no date parameter for the API. Reddit's help centre lists eight filter words for search: author, flair, self, selftext, site, subreddit, title and url. None of them is a date. The timestamp: syntax that still circulates in old guides belonged to the retired cloudsearch backend, as the guide to Reddit search operators explains.
Two outside routes fill the gap.
Google's date operators. Google's help page Refine Google searches documents before: and after:, and says that to find documents "last updated within a particular date range: Combine the before: and after: operators." Pair them with site:reddit.com and your keyword. Note the wording "last updated". Google matches the date it holds for the page, and a thread that drew new comments last week can count as updated even if the post itself is older. Check the post's own timestamp before you treat a result as being from your range.
The Arctic Shift archive. Arctic Shift's API documents after and before parameters on its post and comment search, defined as "Time when thing was posted." That makes it the one route here that filters on posting time. Its keyword search runs only together with an author or subreddit parameter, so you pick a community first. The Arctic Shift guide covers the archive and its search tool.
To pull a date range through Google:
- Open Google and type your keyword, for example
"crm for freelancers". - Add
site:reddit.comto keep results on Reddit, orsite:reddit.com/r/freelanceto keep them in one community. - Add
after:2026-06-01 before:2026-06-16for the first half of June. - Open each result and read the post date on Reddit itself.
- Drop any result whose post date falls outside your range.

How do you find recent Reddit threads you can still reply to?
The fastest way to find recent Reddit threads worth a reply is to search inside one community, sort by New and set the time filter to the past week. Reddit's Available search features article says that when you browse a community, its name "will appear as a pill in the search bar," so your search stays inside it. Sorting by New then lists the newest matching posts first.
Date matters for replies in a concrete way. Reddit's Community settings article says that when a community turns archiving on, posts "will automatically be archived after six months," and after that "users will not be able to vote or comment on posts older than six months." A thread older than six months in such a community is research material, not a place to answer. Within the six months, a fresh thread still has its original poster reading replies. Answer a three-week-old request for a tool and you arrive after the poster has read every other reply.

- Write down three to five phrases a buyer would use, such as "alternative to" plus a competitor name.
- Open each target community and search each phrase.
- Sort by New and set the filter to past week.
- Open threads with few comments first, since an early answer gets read.
- Switch to Comments results with the same phrase, because buyers ask inside other people's threads as well.
Reddit's help centre notes that comment and people searches must "include all of your search words," while post searches only need some of them, so keep comment queries short.
Why does a Reddit date search miss posts?
A Reddit date search misses posts for four documented reasons: the default sort weighs votes as well as age, the time filter only covers windows that end now, deleted posts drop out of search, and comment search requires every word in your query. Check them in that order.
- The sort. Relevance mixes rarity, age, votes and comments. Switch to New when time is what you care about.
- The window. "Past month" means the last month counted back from now. A post from five weeks ago sits under past year, buried among a year of results.
- Deletions. Reddit's account deletion article says a deleted post "is only accessible with a direct link and will not appear in Reddit search." Removals by moderators work differently, as removed vs deleted on Reddit explains.
- Comment matching. Every word in a comment search must appear in the comment. One extra word can empty the results.
How does RedReplier deal with the date problem?
RedReplier solves the date problem by catching posts as they appear, so you never search backwards for last week's thread. RedReplier watches every public subreddit on Reddit for the keywords you target, and you can narrow it to specific communities. It also covers X, Bluesky, Facebook and Hacker News, and ranks each match by buyer intent. Matches land on your RedReplier dashboard within minutes of a post or comment going live, and email alerts go out as digests on a cadence you set per keyword, from hourly to daily. RedReplier drafts a reply, and you review, edit and post it yourself. The Reddit keyword monitoring page shows the setup.
Date search keeps its place for research. Use Google or Arctic Shift to read what a community said during a launch, an outage or a price change, and let monitoring handle the threads you want to answer today.
- Time filter windows always end now
- Relevance weighs votes as well as age
- Communities with archiving close threads after six months
- A late answer arrives after the poster has read the other replies
- Matches land on your dashboard within minutes
- Digests from hourly to daily, set per keyword
- RedReplier drafts a reply, you review and post it
- Google and Arctic Shift stay for research
Frequently asked questions
Can you search Reddit by a specific date?
Not inside Reddit. Reddit's search offers a time filter of past hour, 24 hours, week, month, year and all time, and every window ends now. For a specific date, use Google with site:reddit.com and the after: and before: operators, or the Arctic Shift archive.
How do you sort Reddit search results by newest?
Pick New from the sort menu on the results page. Reddit describes New as the sort that "prioritizes the newest posts, regardless of upvotes and comments." Comment results have a New sort too.
Does Reddit have a timestamp search operator?
No. Reddit's help centre documents eight filter words, and none of them handles dates. The timestamp: syntax in older guides came from the retired cloudsearch backend and appears nowhere in Reddit's current help centre or API reference.
Do Google's after: and before: operators work for Reddit?
Yes, combined with site:reddit.com. Google's help page says they find documents "last updated" in the range, so an older thread with recent comments can appear. Check each post's own date on Reddit.
Can the Reddit API search by date range?
No. The API's search endpoint takes a t parameter of hour, day, week, month, year or all, which mirrors the time filter on the site. It has no start or end date parameter.
How old can a Reddit post be and still take comments?
In a community with archiving switched on, six months. Reddit's Community settings article says users "will not be able to vote or comment on posts older than six months" once a post is archived. Communities with archiving off keep older posts open.
Why does Reddit search show old posts at the top?
The default sort is Relevance, which weighs the rarity of your words, the age of the post, and its votes and comments. Age is only one input, so a popular two-year-old thread can outrank yesterday's question. Switch to New when time is what you care about.
Can you search Reddit comments by date?
Reddit's comment results have three sorts: Relevance, Top and New. New puts the latest comments first, but there is no start or end date. For comments from a set range, the Arctic Shift archive documents after and before parameters on its comment search.
Why can't I find a Reddit post in search?
Four things cause most misses. The sort may be burying it, the time filter may not reach back far enough, the post may be deleted, or your comment query may contain a word the comment lacks. Reddit says a deleted post "is only accessible with a direct link and will not appear in Reddit search."
How do you find new Reddit posts to reply to without searching every day?
Set up keyword monitoring instead of repeating the search. RedReplier watches every public subreddit for your keywords, and matches land on your dashboard within minutes of a post or comment going live. It drafts a reply, and you review, edit and post it yourself.
