TL;DR

Reddit has no single trending page. The trending list appears when you tap the search bar and shows some of the most searched things on Reddit in the last few hours. Popular ranks recent posts by net upvotes, Hot favours recent posts that are getting upvotes, Rising favours posts with the most recent views, and trending notifications point at popular posts in communities you recently visited. All of them reward volume. Buyer questions sit in small threads inside niche subreddits, so use trending to learn the mood and use keyword search or monitoring to find threads you can answer.

Reddit has no single trending page, and what people call Reddit trending is a set of four surfaces: the trending list in the search bar, the Popular feed, the Hot and Rising sorts, and trending notifications. Each one ranks by a different signal. If you want to know what the whole site is talking about, start with the search bar list. If you want threads you can answer, look somewhere else, for reasons covered further down.

Reddit's help article How can I see what's trending on Reddit? describes the search bar list in one line: tapping the search bar shows "a list of some of the most searched things on Reddit in the last few hours." Selecting a topic opens "a special page that has all of the top posts, communities, and people related to that topic."

So the trending list measures searches, not posts. A topic trends because many people typed it, and the page behind it then collects the top posts on that topic.

You can see trending activity in five places on Reddit, and each one comes from Reddit's own help centre. The table lists where to find each one and what moves an item up.

Reddit's content recommendations article says logged-out visitors land on Popular, "which showcases the most popular recent posts on Reddit, as determined by net upvotes." The same article says Reddit can customize Popular by location in certain countries, using the IP address for logged-out visitors and the Location Setting for logged-in ones. Two people in different countries can see different Popular feeds.

The help centre also tells readers which sort to pick for trends. Its filters and sorts article says Hot "prioritizes posts that have recently been getting upvotes, comments, etc. Hot can be used if you're looking for trending topics." The full set of sorts, and what Reddit's archived code computed for each, is in Reddit hot vs new vs top.

A person scrolling through a feed on a phone at a café table, illustrating how Reddit decides what is trending.

Reddit decides trends from popular discussion topics and from which communities are active at the moment, and it publishes no formula beyond that. The content recommendations article says: "We determine trends based on popular discussion topics, including in communities that are particularly active at a given time." It adds that Reddit recommends communities "based on how active they are both in your location and globally, as well as whether they relate to topics that are currently trending."

That is the whole public explanation. Reddit does not publish thresholds, weights or the size of the time window beyond "the last few hours" for the search list. Treat any article that quotes an exact trending algorithm as a guess, because Reddit's help centre does not support it.

What the help centre does say is which inputs feed recommendations in general: upvotes and downvotes, the community, the post's comment history, post type, post age and flair. Reddit does not say whether the trending list uses those signals, but Popular ranks by net upvotes, so a post with a fast burst of votes in a big community has a far better shot there than a careful question in a 4,000-member subreddit.

A subreddit stays off trending lists when its moderators turn off the "Show up in high-traffic feeds" setting, and quarantined communities are kept out by Reddit itself. Reddit's article How can I control how people find my community? says that setting lets a community and its posts show up in "r/all and r/popular", "The communities tab" and "Trending lists." The same article notes that communities "Usually" end up in those feeds "because they have a post that starts trending or goes viral."

Quarantine closes the door from Reddit's side. The Quarantined Communities article says quarantined communities "do not appear in non-subscription-based feeds (eg Popular), and are not included in search or recommendations."

This matters for anyone hunting conversations. Support groups, small professional subreddits and communities that turned discovery off will never trend, however good their threads are. Check small communities by hand, starting from a list such as the best subreddits for marketing, instead of waiting for them to surface in a trending list.

You turn off trending notifications in your notification settings, under Recommendations, and Reddit only lets you switch them off for all communities at once. Reddit's trending notifications article defines them as "notifications you get about popular posts from communities you've recently visited" and says you "can't turn off trending notifications for a specific community."

Reddit trending is a poor place to find buyers, because every trending surface rewards volume and buyer questions are small, specific threads. A post asking "which invoicing tool handles multiple currencies?" in r/smallbusiness collects a dozen comments and a handful of votes. It will never reach Popular, and too few people search for it to make the trending list.

Trending still has two uses for someone who replies to threads by hand:

  • Timing. When a news event in your category trends, watch the niche subreddits in that category for follow-up questions from people affected by it.
  • Language. The top posts on a trending topic page show the words people use for it, which you can turn into search terms.

For the threads themselves, this process works better than scrolling Popular:

  1. Pick three to five subreddits where your buyers ask questions, using the community list on the trending topic page as a starting point.
  2. Open each one and sort by New, not Hot, so small threads are not buried under popular ones.
  3. Run Reddit search inside each community for problem phrases, sorted by New with the time filter set to past week.
  4. Read each thread and the subreddit rules before writing anything.
  5. Reply with an answer that solves the poster's problem even if they never click your link.

Step 4 is where most brand replies fail. Reddit's own reddiquette page caps your own content at one in ten submissions as a rule of thumb, and individual subreddits set tighter rules.

Trending post or buyer thread
What trending rewards
  • A big community
  • A fast burst of votes
  • Searches from many people
  • A reply lands among hundreds of others
What a buyer thread looks like
  • A niche subreddit
  • A dozen comments and a handful of votes
  • Never reaches Popular
  • One helpful answer gets seen
Trending rewards volume, so the threads where buyers ask questions rarely show up there.

Reddit has its own keyword trend tool, called Trends, inside Reddit Pro, and it has documented limits. Reddit's Reddit Pro Feature: Trends article says Trends lets you "monitor keywords to see where, when, and how they're being discussed on Reddit," shows the most discussed posts and comments, and lists the communities talking about a keyword.

The same article lists what Trends leaves out. "Only public and SFW communities are used to inform Reddit Pro insights," private, banned, quarantined and NSFW communities are excluded, and "Currently Reddit Pro only aggregates English conversations." Conversation volume and related keywords work only for "smart keywords," which Reddit says are "currently only available for some keywords."

RedReplier takes the same keyword approach and points it at threads you can answer. It watches every public subreddit, plus X, Bluesky, Facebook and Hacker News, for the keywords you choose and ranks each match by buyer intent. Matches land on your RedReplier dashboard within minutes of a post or comment going live, and email alerts go out as digests on a cadence you set per keyword, from hourly to daily. The Reddit keyword monitoring workflow drafts a reply for each match, and you review, edit and post it yourself. RedReplier never posts to Reddit automatically.

The difference from trending is the unit of attention. Trending tells you what a million people looked at today. A keyword feed tells you that one person in r/freelance asked the exact question your product answers, 20 minutes ago. For the methods behind reading wider shifts over time, see trend analysis.

Frequently asked questions

The trending list appears when you click or tap the search bar on reddit.com or in the Reddit app. Reddit's help centre says it shows some of the most searched things on Reddit in the last few hours. Selecting a topic opens a page with the top posts, communities and people for that topic.

No. Popular is a feed of the most popular recent posts, which Reddit says it ranks by net upvotes, while the trending list ranks topics by recent searches. A topic can trend in search without any single post reaching Popular.

Reddit's help centre says the list covers searches from "the last few hours" and gives no refresh interval. Reddit publishes no exact window or update schedule, so any specific number you read elsewhere did not come from Reddit.

Reddit's help centre does not say whether the search bar trending list is personalized. It does say Popular can be tailored by location in certain countries, and that community recommendations depend on how active communities are in your location and globally. Those two surfaces can differ between two accounts in different places.

Can my subreddit post reach Reddit trending?

A post can only reach trending lists if the subreddit's moderators leave the "Show up in high-traffic feeds" setting on. Quarantined communities never appear in Popular, search or recommendations. Reddit says communities usually end up in those feeds because they have a post that starts trending or goes viral.

Brands get little from replying to trending posts, because a reply lands among hundreds of others on a topic that has nothing to do with a purchase. Smaller threads where someone asks for a recommendation give a single helpful answer far more visibility. Read the subreddit rules first and answer the question before mentioning any product.

What is the difference between Hot and Rising on Reddit?

Hot favours recent posts that have been getting upvotes, comments and similar activity, and Reddit says you can use it to look for trending topics. Rising favours posts with the most recent views and sits in the sort menu on reddit.com. Neither is the trending list, which ranks searches.

Reddit does not allow it. Trending notifications cover popular posts from communities you recently visited, and the only switch is Trending Posts under Recommendations in your notification settings. It turns them off for all communities at once.

Reddit publishes only a short description. It says it determines trends from popular discussion topics, including communities that are particularly active at a given time, and it gives no thresholds, weights or exact time window. Treat any article that quotes a precise formula as a guess.

It leaves out private, banned, quarantined and NSFW communities, because only public and SFW communities inform Reddit Pro insights. It also aggregates only English conversations. Conversation volume and related keywords work only for smart keywords, which are available for some keywords.
