What a Reddit Moderator Can Remove, Ban and Automate in a SubredditWhat a Reddit Moderator Can Remove, Ban and Automate in a Subreddit

TL;DR

8 min read

A Reddit moderator is a volunteer user who runs a subreddit. Mods write the community rules, remove posts and comments that break them, ban and mute accounts, and set up automated filters such as AutoModerator. Reddit employees, called admins, enforce the sitewide Reddit Rules on top of that. Mods cannot edit or delete your content, see who voted, or see your IP address. A removal reason can arrive as a comment, a mod mail message or not at all, so a brand replying in a subreddit should read the rules and the posting requirements before the first comment.

Every subreddit runs on a volunteer reddit moderator team that writes the community rules, removes posts and comments that break them, and bans accounts that keep breaking them. Reddit's help center describes mods as "volunteer Reddit users who help ensure that your favorite communities are fun, interesting, and well-organized places." If your brand replies to threads on Reddit, the mod team of each subreddit decides whether your reply stays up, so learn what they can do before you post.

What is a reddit moderator?

A reddit moderator is a user who holds mod permissions in one community and enforces that community's own rules. Reddit's page on content moderation says community rules "are created and enforced by community moderators" and that "Mods perform the majority of community moderation actions across the platform."

Mods are not Reddit staff. Reddit employees are called admins, and they enforce the sitewide Reddit Rules on every community. Mods sit under a separate rulebook, the Moderator Code of Conduct, whose current version took effect on June 5, 2025. Its five rules ask mods to keep a stable community, set clear expectations, leave other communities alone, stay active, and moderate with integrity.

Rule 5 matters to brands. Mods "are prohibited from taking moderation actions (including actions taken using mod tools, bots, and other services) in exchange for any form of compensation." Paying a mod to pin your post or approve your link breaks the code. The same rule says "activity in your subreddit from a brand or company" is allowed "so long as no compensation is received." A brand can take part in a subreddit. It cannot buy a mod's help.

What can a moderator do to your post or comment?

A moderator can remove, approve, lock, flair or highlight any post or comment in the community they run, and can ban or mute the account that wrote it. Reddit's "What mods can do" and "User Management" articles list the actions, and the mod's permissions decide which ones a given mod can use.

Mod actionWhat it doesWhat you notice as the poster
RemoveTakes a post or comment out of the communityOthers stop seeing it in the subreddit
ApproveRestores content a filter removed by mistakeYour post reappears
LockStops new comments on a thread, or new replies under a commentNo one can add new comments there
BanStops you posting or commenting in that community, temporary or permanentYou get a message with the mod's ban note
MuteStops you sending mod mail for 3, 7 or 28 days, or permanentlyYou cannot message the mod team
Flair, distinguish, highlightLabels posts, marks official mod replies, pins posts to the topYour post gets a label or moves
Contest modeHides replies to top-level comments, scrambles comment order and hides scoresYour comment's score disappears

Reddit also lists what mods cannot do. A mod cannot edit your posts or comments, cannot delete them (only remove them from the community they mod), cannot move threads, cannot read your chat messages, and cannot see your IP address. Mods also cannot see who voted on content or who reported it.

Mods split the work through permissions. The "Everything" permission adds and removes mods and edits the permissions of mods below in the list. "Manage Users" covers bans and the approved submitters list. "Manage Settings" changes the community rules and content controls. "Manage Posts & Comments" opens the mod queue, the spam queue and the reports queue, and grants the remove and approve buttons. "Mail" covers mod mail, and "Wiki" covers wiki pages. A mod can only remove or edit mods ranked below them.

What does AutoModerator do in a subreddit?

AutoModerator is Reddit's built-in rules engine that mods configure on a wiki page called config/automoderator, and it acts on new posts and comments as they arrive. Reddit's help article says automod can remove or flair posts "by domain or keyword," remove affiliate links and other links a subreddit bans, filter content for review, reply with a pointer to the rules, and "Identify potential spammers or low-quality contributors."

Automod has limits. It only works on new posts, comments, reports and edits, so it does not go back over old threads. It cannot spot duplicate content, and it cannot delay an action. Setting it up takes both the config and wiki permissions.

Newer communities get a different system. Reddit's automod article says that for newly created communities, or ones where automod hasn't been used, automod's enforcement actions "will no longer be available." Those communities use the Rules tool instead, where a large language model can auto-enforce a rule with one of four actions: Report, Remove for review, Remove, or Only show guidance.

For a brand, the practical point is that a removal can happen before any human mod reads your comment. A link to your own domain or a product keyword can trip a filter on submission. If your reply disappears right after you post it, read how to tell a Reddit shadowban apart from a mod removal before you post it again.

How do people become Reddit moderators?

People become Reddit moderators in one of four ways, according to Reddit's "Ways to become a moderator" article:

  1. Creating a community. The creator becomes its top moderator.
  2. Requesting an unmoderated one. Users can ask to take over a community with no active mods through r/redditrequest.
  3. Invitation. An existing mod team invites them, which Reddit calls the more common route. Inviting a mod needs the "everything" permission.
  4. Application. Communities with mod applications enabled show a "Help lead our community" banner and an Apply button.

Reddit's advice for would-be mods starts with "Establish yourself as a positive and knowledgeable member of the community." That same history is what earns a brand account trust in a subreddit.

What does a mod removal look like to the poster?

A mod removal takes your post or comment out of the community, and whether you hear about it depends on the mod. When a mod removes content from the mod queue, Reddit's Saved Responses tool lets them attach a removal reason and send it as a comment or a mod mail message, and the mobile flow lists "none" as a third choice. A removal reason left as a comment is locked from replies by default.

A ban always sends a message. Reddit's ban flow sends the user the mod's ban note, and any reply from the banned user lands in the community's Ban Appeals folder in mod mail.

Sitewide removals by admins work differently. When Reddit removes content for breaking the Reddit Rules, "the account that posted the content is notified of the removal reason and provided instructions for how to appeal," and appeals are open for six months. Appeals of a subreddit ban go to that subreddit's mod team through the Ban Appeals folder.

If you can't find your post, Reddit's "Why can't I see my post?" article lists the checks: sort the subreddit by New, reread the community rules, and check whether the spam filter caught you because you have little karma in that community. If you think a moderator removed it "by accident or unfairly," Reddit says to send the mod team a mod mail message. Our page on removed vs deleted posts on Reddit covers how each state looks to other users.

Four ways a brand reply gets removed
1
AutoModerator filter. Can remove a reply on submission, before any human mod reads it.
2
Mod removal. A mod takes it out of the community and sends the reason as a comment, as a mod mail message or not at all.
3
Subreddit ban. Stops you posting or commenting in that community, and you get the mod's ban note. Appeals go to the Ban Appeals folder.
4
Admin removal. Reddit removes content that breaks the Reddit Rules, notifies the account and keeps appeals open for six months.
Each layer has its own appeal route, so find out which one removed your reply.

What should a brand check before replying in a subreddit?

A brand should read the subreddit's rules, confirm its account meets the posting requirements, and answer the thread's actual question before mentioning a product. Reddit's Spam policy says "community moderators adjudicate what constitutes unwanted/spammy content in their communities," so the mod team's reading of its rules is the one that counts.

  1. Read the rules and sidebar. Rules carry report reasons, so a member who thinks your reply breaks one can report it under that rule.
  2. Find the self-promotion rule. Some subreddits ban promotion outright and others limit it to one weekly thread. The Reddit 9:1 rule that marketers cite is not sitewide policy, so the subreddit's own wording is what applies.
  3. Check your eligibility. Reddit's Poster Eligibility Guide shows when an account fails a community's account age, karma or verified email criteria. Reddit says specific thresholds "aren't disclosed at this time to deter potential misuse." See where Reddit karma requirements come from.
  4. Say who you are. Reddit Rule 5 says "do not intentionally mislead others." State that you work on the product when you recommend it.
  5. Ask when unsure. Reddit's Spam article says "You may also contact the moderators of the community if you need additional clarifications." A short mod mail before a product mention costs less than a ban.

How does RedReplier help you reply within subreddit rules?

RedReplier shows you which subreddits allow your kind of reply and which ones to avoid, then finds the threads in them. Subreddit Suggestions in RedReplier ranks communities by fit with your product and flags each one's posting rules, marking subreddits that ban self-promotion or restrict it to a single weekly thread with an avoid badge and the exact rule behind it. RedReplier watches every public subreddit for your keywords, or only the communities you pick. Matches land on your RedReplier dashboard within minutes of a post going live, and email alerts go out as digests on a cadence you set per keyword, from hourly to daily. RedReplier drafts a reply and never posts it for you, so you read the subreddit rules, edit the draft and post it from your own account.

Frequently asked questions

Are Reddit moderators paid?

No. Reddit describes moderators as volunteer users. The Moderator Code of Conduct forbids mods from taking mod actions in exchange for money, gifts, Reddit Premium, merchandise or favors from third parties.

What is the difference between a Reddit moderator and a Reddit admin?

A moderator is a volunteer who enforces one community's rules. An admin is a Reddit employee who enforces the sitewide Reddit Rules across every community. Admins can also act against mods who break the Moderator Code of Conduct, including removing them from a community.

Can a Reddit moderator delete my post?

A moderator can remove your post from the community they moderate, but cannot delete it or edit it. Reddit's "What mods can't do" article says mods can only remove content in communities they mod. Only you can delete your own post.

Will a moderator tell me why my post was removed?

Not always. A mod can send a removal reason as a comment or a mod mail message, and the mobile tool also offers "none." If you can't find your post, check the rules and send the mod team a mod mail message.

Can Reddit moderators see who upvoted or downvoted a post?

No. Reddit's help center says mods cannot know who voted on things in their community, who reported things, or who joined it. They also cannot see your IP address.

Does AutoModerator remove posts without a human checking?

Yes, if the mods set a rule to remove. AutoModerator applies the subreddit's rules to new posts and comments as they arrive, and it can remove, filter for review or report them. A human mod can approve a post that a filter removed by mistake.

How do I contact a subreddit's moderators?

Send the mod team a mod mail message. Reddit says to do this if you think a moderator removed your content by accident or unfairly, or if you need a rule clarified. A short message before a product mention costs less than a ban.

Can a Reddit moderator ban me from a subreddit?

Yes. A mod with the Manage Users permission can stop an account from posting or commenting in their community, temporarily or permanently. The ban covers only that subreddit, and you get a message with the mod's ban note. Your reply lands in the Ban Appeals folder of the community's mod mail.

Can a brand pay a Reddit moderator to approve its post?

No. Rule 5 of the Moderator Code of Conduct prohibits mod actions in exchange for any form of compensation. A brand can take part in a subreddit as long as no compensation is received. Admins can act against mods who break the code, including removing them from a community or suspending their accounts.

Why was my Reddit comment removed right after I posted it?

An automated filter can catch a comment before any human reads it. AutoModerator can remove content by domain or keyword, including affiliate links, and the spam filter can catch accounts with little karma in that community. Read the subreddit rules and send the mod team a mod mail message if you think it was a mistake.
