TL;DR

The word shadowban appears nowhere in X's Help Center. What X does document, in its own words, is visibility filtering in search, ineligibility for recommendation, post-level labels saying "we limited the post's visibility," and a temporary limited state in which "your account and posts may be filtered out of certain places on X, including from search results and notifications." X publishes its search ranking formula as 1 x engagement + 0.5 x health + 0.031 x relevance and admits a curation step on autocomplete suggestions. It will not confirm that any individual account is filtered, will not name the threshold, and offers an appeal only where it attached a visible label.

What is an X shadowban?

The phrase X shadowban describes the gap between what a user can post and what anyone else can find, and X has no equivalent term for it. Searching X's Help Center for the word returns nothing: the enforcement pages, the recommendation policy, the search rules and the locked account guidance all describe the behavior without ever using the label. That absence is not evidence the behavior does not exist. X documents four distinct mechanisms that produce it, and names each one differently.

Stop asking whether you are shadowbanned and start asking which of X's documented states you are in, because they have different symptoms, surfaces and appeal routes.

What does X call it instead?

At the post level, X calls it limiting post visibility, and the definition is specific enough to be testable. X says it will "restrict the reach of posts that violate our policies and create a negative experience for other users by making the post less discoverable on X," then lists exactly how:

  • "Excluding the post from search results, trends, and recommended notifications"
  • "Removing the post from the For you and Following timelines"
  • "Restricting the post's discoverability to the author's profile"
  • "Downranking the post in replies"
  • "Restricting Likes, replies, Reposts, Quote posts, bookmarks, share, pin to profile, or Edit post"

A post restricted to the author's profile and downranked in replies is indistinguishable, from the author's seat, from a normal post. That is the shadowban definition in X's own bullets. X does attach a label in some cases: "Starting in April 2023, posts identified as violating our Rules will begin to receive labels informing both post authors and viewers that we limited the post's visibility," and "authors will be able to submit an appeal on the label if they think we incorrectly limited their post's visibility."

At the account level, the term is limited state, and X states the effect without hedging: "During a limited state, your account and posts may be filtered out of certain places on X, including from search results and notifications." It also lists a softer version: "this could mean that only your followers are able to see your activity on X, including posts, likes, reposts, etc." That page describes a specified countdown, tells you the option to verify by phone may not be offered "if your account appears to have engaged in repeated violations of the X Rules," and points appeals at the support form.

What content does X refuse to recommend?

Deamplification has its own policy page and its own governing sentence, which X quotes from itself: "freedom of speech is a fundamental human right, but freedom to have that speech amplified by X is not." The recommendations policy then states that harmful or offensive content "may not be eligible for amplification in the following ways: as a recommendation in Home timeline from someone you don't follow, as part of the top section of Replies in post details or conversations, as a recommendation on the 'For you tab' in Explore, as a push notification."

The list of what stays out is enumerated rather than vague. X names five content categories, including "content that violates any of the X Rules, but has been left on the platform due to the public-interest exception," content promoting regulated substances or weapons, "content that is deemed marginally abusive," and, most consequentially for ordinary accounts, "content that automated systems have determined may violate the X Rules, but that has not yet been reviewed by a human and/or may have been identified in error." X is stating outright that unreviewed machine decisions, including mistakes, suppress reach.

Three account categories are ineligible in the same way: "accounts that recently violated the X Rules," "accounts that are thought to be engaged in spammy behavior," and accounts carrying graphic violence or hateful imagery in profile elements. The policy closes the loop honestly: "content that can't be recommended will still be available on X to people who follow the post author and on the post author's profile." Reach collapses, the post stays up, and nothing tells you.

X publishes more about its search pipeline than about anything else in this list, because European regulators require it. The search recommender disclosure uses the term directly: "search mixer uses visibility filtering to ensure it does not return posts to users for blocked users, protected users, deactivated users," and the Latest tab applies "global visibility filter removing posts from spam accounts, protected accounts, deactivated accounts, and so on."

The same page prints the ranking formula. Top results are scored as 1 * engagement + 0.5 * health + 0.031 * Relevance, where the health score "is based on spam reports, number of blocked, number of policies infractions, spam post content." Health carries sixteen times the weight of relevance. A rising spam report count moves you down search results by design, with no notice and no violation notice attached.

Search suggestions are a separate system. X calls it typeahead, describes it as "a system that serves autocomplete suggestions for prefixes" used in "the Search bar, post compose box, and DM target user selector," and lists among its steps: "Curation steps: to allow easy filtering of damaging content on the platform." That is the closest thing X publishes to a search suggestion ban, and it is one line inside a technical annex.

The older search rules article is blunter. "Material that jeopardizes search quality or creates a bad search experience for other people may be automatically removed from X search," and the triggers it lists are duplicate posts, hashtag abuse, automated posts or replies, the same message across multiple accounts, and aggressive follow and unfollow behavior. The consolation X offers describes the shadowban experience in a sentence: "If you are being filtered from search, rest assured that your followers will still receive your updates."

A magnifying glass hovers over a list of results, standing in for the act of checking whether a search turns up your own posts.

X's Top search ranking weights
Engagement1
Health0.5
Relevance0.031
X's search mixer scores Top results as 1 x engagement + 0.5 x health + 0.031 x relevance, so health carries roughly sixteen times the weight of relevance.

Which account status signals can you check?

X gives you no dashboard that names your filtering state. What it gives you is a set of surfaces where filtering becomes visible, and each one tests a different mechanism.

X's own troubleshooting page for missing search results lists causes worth eliminating before assuming enforcement: protected posts, an unconfirmed email address, sensitive content caught by safe search, and the catch-all "do your posts contribute to the conversation in a meaningful way?" An unconfirmed email address is the cheapest cause on that list to rule out.

The logged-out profile check is the same technique that works on Reddit shadowbans, and on X it is weaker, because X's filtering is graded rather than binary. A shadowbanned Reddit account returns a 404. A deamplified X account returns a perfectly normal profile. Anyone tracking impressions on X across a drop should compare the Latest tab against the Top tab for the same query, since the two run different filters, and should use advanced search operators such as from: and filter:replies to isolate which surface actually lost the post.

What will X not confirm?

Three things, and it is worth being exact about them.

X will not confirm that a specific account is filtered. Its Help Center carries no article named account status and no published lookup, and every appeal route it does publish attaches to an action you were notified about: a label, a lock, a limited state, a suspension. Deamplification generates no notice, so there is nothing to appeal.

X will not publish the threshold. It names the health score's inputs (spam reports, blocks, policy infractions, spam post content) and its weight at 0.5, and gives no figure for how many reports move an account or how far. It also will not commit to a duration outside the limited state, which runs "for a specified time, which varies based on the nature of the violation." Recommendation ineligibility for "accounts that recently violated the X Rules" has no published clock at all.

X will not claim the decisions are correct. It states the opposite, listing among ineligible content material that "may have been identified in error," and noting on the search side that top posts "are selected through an algorithm, we do not manually curate search results."

Frequently asked questions

Does X use the word shadowban?

No. The term appears in none of X's enforcement, recommendation, search or account help articles. X uses limiting post visibility, ineligible for recommendations, filtered from search, and temporary limited state to describe the same family of outcomes.

What is the difference between a search ban and deamplification on X?

A search ban removes you from search results, which X describes as automatic removal of "material that jeopardizes search quality." Deamplification keeps you searchable but blocks recommendation surfaces: the For You timeline for non-followers, the top of replies, the Explore For You tab, and push notifications.

Can I tell whether my X posts are visibility limited?

Only where X attaches a label. Since April 2023, posts X has restricted "will begin to receive labels informing both post authors and viewers that we limited the post's visibility," and the author can appeal the label. Recommendation ineligibility carries no label and no notification.

Open a logged-out browser, search your own exact post text and select Latest. X applies only a "global visibility filter removing posts from spam accounts, protected accounts, deactivated accounts" to Latest, so a post that is missing there and present on your profile points at account-level filtering.

Why would my X posts drop out of search without a violation?

X's own troubleshooting list names protected posts, an unconfirmed email address, and safe search catching sensitive content. Beyond that, the Top ranking formula is 1 * engagement + 0.5 * health + 0.031 * Relevance, and the health score responds to spam reports and blocks with no violation required.

Can I appeal an X shadowban?

You can appeal what X labels. Appeals exist for a limited post visibility label, a locked account, a limited account state and a suspension, all through the support form. There is no appeal path for recommendation ineligibility, because X issues no notice of it.

Does X ever leave a rule-violating post up but stop recommending it?

X names one ineligible category as "content that violates any of the X Rules, but has been left on the platform due to the public-interest exception." The post stays live, but it loses eligibility as a Home timeline recommendation to non-followers, the top of replies, the Explore For you tab, and push notifications. Reach drops while the post itself remains visible on the profile.

Can repeated rule violations block phone verification during a limited state?

X's limited account page states the option to verify by phone "may not be offered" if an account "appears to have engaged in repeated violations of the X Rules." That removes the fastest route out, leaving only the option to use X in a limited state for the specified time listed.

Is search suggestion curation the same thing as a shadowban?

Not exactly. X's typeahead system, which powers autocomplete in the search bar, the post compose box, and the DM target selector, includes "curation steps to allow easy filtering of damaging content on the platform." That single line is the closest X comes to documenting a search suggestion ban, and it sits in a technical annex rather than an enforcement policy.

Which accounts does X exclude from recommendations regardless of what they post?

Three categories: accounts that "recently violated the X Rules," accounts "thought to be engaged in spammy behavior," and accounts that "contain graphic violence or hateful imagery in X profile elements." Landing in any of these categories removes recommendation eligibility no matter what an individual post says.
