TL;DR

Unlinked brand mentions are pages that name your company, product or people without an HTML link to your site. You find them with Google operators such as "yourbrand" -site:yourbrand.com, alerts and monitoring tools, then confirm there is no link in the page source. Google has published no documentation saying unlinked mentions are a ranking signal. John Mueller said on 25 March 2022 that with no link "there is no signal passing," while Gary Illyes said in 2017 that mentions help Google learn a brand is an entity. Link reclamation is a short, specific email asking the writer to add the link.

What are unlinked brand mentions?

Your unlinked brand mentions are the pages that name your company, product or founder in their text without a link pointing to your site. In HTML terms, the brand name appears on the page but no <a> element with an href to your domain does.

A few cases sit near the line, so it helps to be precise:

  • A link marked rel="nofollow", rel="ugc" or rel="sponsored" is still a link. It is not an unlinked mention. Our explainer on nofollow vs dofollow covers what those attributes do.
  • A URL written as plain text, like yourbrand.com with no anchor tag, is unlinked. Readers can copy it, crawlers do not treat it as a link.
  • A mention inside an image, a video or a podcast episode is unlinked in the page, even when the show notes link elsewhere.

The practical reason to care is simple. Someone already wrote about you and chose to name you. Asking them to add a link is a smaller request than asking a stranger to write about you at all, and the writer has already shown they know who you are.

Does Google count unlinked mentions as a ranking signal?

Google has published no documentation that names unlinked brand mentions as a ranking signal. What exists is two lines in Google's public pages and a handful of comments from Google staff, and they point in slightly different directions.

Start with the documentation. Google's link best practices page says: "Google uses links as a signal when determining the relevancy of pages and to find new pages to crawl." It also says Google "can only crawl your link if it's an <a> HTML element" with an href attribute. An unlinked mention has neither.

Then there is Google's "How Search Works" page on ranking results, which says: "one of the factors used to determine quality is understanding if other prominent websites link or refer to the content." Google does not define "refer to" anywhere on that page. SEO writers often read it as proof that unlinked mentions count. It is not proof of that. It is an undefined phrase.

Here is what Google's representatives have said on the record:

SpeakerDateWhereWhat they said
Gary IllyesPubcon Las Vegas 2017, transcript published 12 December 2017Keynote conversation with Eric Enge, transcript on Perficient's blog"Once you start getting mentions, we start learning that, yes, this is an entity." Also: "plain mentions are good, structured mentions are even better."
John Mueller21 May 2020Post on Twitter, since deleted, reported the same day by Search Engine RoundtableAsked whether "unlinked brand citations can help in defining trust of a website / brand," he wrote: "The short version is 'usually not, imo'."
John Mueller25 March 2022English Google SEO office-hours, Google Search Central YouTube channel, about 48 minutes in"If there's no link to your pages, then it's not really a link there." And: "there is no link, so there is no signal passing like there would be with any normal link there."

The 2022 answer is the clearest thing Google has said. Mueller went on: "That doesn't mean that these mentions are bad, or that you need to avoid them... It's really just, we don't treat these as links." He added that users may see the mention, search for your site, and "go to your site anyway."

The Illyes comment is about something else. He was describing how Google learns what a brand is and what topics it belongs to, not whether a mention passes ranking value. When Eric Enge asked what a structured mention was, Illyes answered "Structured data."

Put together, the record says this. A mention without a link passes no link signal, according to the Googler who was asked that exact question in 2022. Mentions may help Google recognise your brand as an entity, according to a Googler speaking in 2017. Anything stronger than that, such as "Google treats mentions as implied links," has no Google source behind it.

The 2020 tweet has a small footnote of its own. Mueller has since deleted it, and X's embed service now returns "This Post was deleted by the Post author." The wording survives only in Search Engine Roundtable's report from the same day, so cite it as a reported quote.

How do you find unlinked brand mentions?

You find them by searching for your brand name on pages that are not yours, then checking each result for a link. Three sources cover most of it.

Google search operators. Google's own help page documents quotes for exact match, site: to limit a search to a domain, - to exclude a term, and after: for recent documents. Combined:

"yourbrand" -site:yourbrand.com -site:linkedin.com -site:x.com after:2026-06-01

Run separate queries for product names, the founder's name and common misspellings. Swap after: for a new date each time you check, so you only review new pages.

Alerts and monitoring tools. A standing alert on the brand name catches news and blog mentions as they are indexed, so you are not starting from a search each month. Our guide on how to monitor brand mentions walks through query design, alert tiers and a weekly review routine, and brand monitoring covers who on the team should own each type of mention.

Your own referral data. Pages that mention you but send no referral traffic are candidates. Pages that send traffic already link to you.

Once you have a candidate URL, confirm there is no link. Viewing the source and searching for your domain works. So does pasting this into the browser console on the page:

document.querySelectorAll('a[href*="yourbrand.com"]').length

A result of 0 means no link to your domain anywhere on the page. Check the right domain, including any product subdomain or country site.

Which unlinked mentions are worth chasing?

Not every mention deserves an email. Community and social posts rarely change, and asking a Reddit commenter to edit a two-year-old comment for your benefit looks worse than the missing link. Links on Reddit also carry rel attributes, as our check of whether Reddit links are nofollow shows in the live HTML.

For mentions on Reddit, X, Bluesky, Hacker News and Facebook, the useful response is a reply in the thread while it is still active. RedReplier's Reddit brand monitoring surfaces those mentions and drafts a reply that a person reviews and posts.

A woman typing an email on a laptop, the way you would write a short request asking a writer to add a link.

Send one short email to the person who wrote the page, not a generic contact form. Say thanks, point to the exact sentence, give the exact URL, and make one ask. Here is a version that respects the writer's time:

Subject: Thanks for mentioning [Brand] in "[Article title]"

Hi [Name],

Thanks for including [Brand] in your piece on [topic]. The line
"[quoted sentence that names you]" is a fair description of what we do.

Would you be open to linking our name to [exact URL]? That page covers
[the specific thing the article discusses], so it should be useful to
your readers.

Either way, thanks for the mention.

[Your name]
[Role, Brand]

A few rules keep this effective and clean:

  • Link to the most relevant page. If the article discusses your pricing, ask for the pricing page, not the home page.
  • Fix errors in the same email. If the article gets a fact wrong, correct it politely. Writers act on corrections faster than on link requests.
  • Offer nothing in exchange. Google's spam policies list "Exchanging money for links," "Exchanging goods or services for links" and "Sending someone a product in exchange for them writing about it and including a link" as link spam. A thank-you is fine. A discount code for the link is not.
  • Follow up once. One polite nudge after a week or two is normal. A third email turns a warm contact cold.
  • Accept the attribute they choose. If the site adds rel="nofollow", the link still sends readers to you. Do not argue about it.

Track each request in a sheet with the page URL, date sent, reply and outcome. After a quarter you will know which publications update pages and which never do, and you can stop emailing the second group.

Frequently asked questions

What is an unlinked brand mention?

An unlinked brand mention is a page that names your brand, product or people in its text without an HTML link to your website. A nofollow link is still a link. A URL typed as plain text with no anchor tag counts as unlinked.

Do unlinked brand mentions help SEO?

Google has not documented unlinked mentions as a ranking signal. John Mueller said in a 25 March 2022 office-hours session that without a link "there is no signal passing." Gary Illyes said in 2017 that mentions help Google learn that a brand is an entity. The measurable benefit comes from turning a mention into a real link.

Link reclamation is the practice of asking the owner of a page to add or restore a link to your site. It covers unlinked brand mentions, links pointing to pages you deleted or moved, and links with a broken URL.

How do I find unlinked mentions for free?

Search Google with your brand in quotes and exclude your own site, for example "yourbrand" -site:yourbrand.com. Add after: with a date to see only recent pages. Then open each result and check the source for a link to your domain.

Should I pay for a link on an article that already mentions us?

No. Google's spam policies list exchanging money, goods or services for links as link spam. Send a thank-you and a specific request, and accept the answer the writer gives.

How long should I wait before following up?

Wait a week or two, then send one short follow-up. If there is still no reply, move on and note the publication in your tracking sheet.

What should I do about a brand mention on Reddit or social media?

Reply in the thread instead of emailing for an edit. Community and social posts rarely change, and a request to update an old comment looks worse than the missing link. RedReplier's Reddit brand monitoring feature surfaces these mentions and drafts a reply that a person checks before posting.

No. If the site adds rel="nofollow" to the link, it still sends readers to your site, so accept the attribute the writer chooses. Arguing about rel attributes turns a simple request into a negotiation the writer never signed up for.

What if the article that mentions me also gets a fact wrong?

Correct the error in the same email that asks for the link. Writers act on corrections faster than on link requests, and pointing out a mistake shows you read the piece closely. Keep the correction polite and specific, the exact sentence and the right fact.

Why do some SEO writers treat Google's "How Search Works" page as proof that unlinked mentions count?

That page lists one quality factor as "understanding if other prominent websites link or refer to the content," and Google never defines "refer to" anywhere on the page. Writers read the undefined phrase as covering unlinked mentions, but that is an interpretation, not a documented ranking signal. The clearer, on-the-record answer came from John Mueller in 2022, who said a mention with no link passes no signal.
