TL;DR

A megathread is one post that moderators pin to the top of a community to hold every discussion of a single topic, so the same question stops arriving as dozens of separate posts. Reddit's help centre calls it the community's "One True Source" for a topic and says it decreases duplicate content. Moderators pin it through Community highlights, which holds up to six posts on reddit.com and two stickies on old Reddit, and can redirect new posts into it with Post & Comment Guidance. For anyone looking for buyers, a megathread is where recommendation questions end up, so find the pinned post, sort its comments by new and check it again every time a new one is posted.

What is a Reddit megathread?

Moderators create a Reddit megathread as a single pinned post that collects every discussion of one topic, so members comment there instead of opening a new post each time. Reddit's Crisis management article for moderators describes it as "your community's One True Source for all of the relevant links, articles, and updates" on a topic. When you want to answer questions in a community, the megathread is where a large share of those questions sit, so find it before you search anywhere else.

Megathreads come in two shapes. A topic megathread covers one event or issue and stays pinned while it lasts. A recurring megathread, such as a weekly questions thread or a weekly self-promotion thread, is posted again on a schedule, and each week's copy is a new post with a new URL. Reddit lists "Weekly discussion threads" among the common uses for pinned posts in its Community highlights article, and its guide for new moderators suggests "'What's on?' Megathreads" for local communities.

How do moderators pin a megathread?

Moderators pin a megathread through Community highlights, Reddit's name for sticky or pinned posts. The Community highlights article says moderators "with the Manage posts and comments permission can highlight (also known as sticky or pin) up to six posts at the top of their community." The highlighted post sits in a carousel at the top of the community "until a mod removes it."

The steps on reddit.com, from the same article:

  1. Click the mod shield icon below the post.
  2. Select Add to highlights.
  3. Assign a label. Reddit's suggested labels are Event, Megathread and Announcement.

The label is why many megathreads carry the word "Megathread" on their card. Old Reddit keeps the older system. Moderators click "make announcement," and the post "will now be stickied in green and will remain at the top of your community when posts are sorted by 'Hot'." Old Reddit allows two stickies, and those two fill the first two slots of the highlights carousel on reddit.com.

The last row matters for anyone scanning feeds. Reddit's What mods can do page says "highlighted posts are indistinguishable from regular posts when a user views them from outside of the community where they were posted." You only see that a post is the community's megathread when you open the community itself.

Recurring megathreads are automated. Reddit's Scheduled and Recurring Posts article lets moderators repeat a post hourly, daily, weekly or monthly, and the scheduler has a pin option, First pinned or Second pinned, that highlights each new copy as it goes live.

Why do recommendation questions get redirected into megathreads?

Moderators redirect recommendation questions into megathreads to stop the same question from filling the front page as separate posts. In the words of Reddit's Crisis management article, a single thread "helps decrease the frequency of duplicate content and prevents your community from becoming overwhelmed by repetitive posts." A "which tool should I use" question is the textbook duplicate, asked again with a different budget each time.

Reddit gives moderators a tool built for the redirect. Its Post & Comment Guidance feature has an automation called "Redirect content somewhere else," which "helps to redirect posts or comments to another subreddit or megathread." The same article lists "megathreads you want to redirect users to" as a good-faith use case. If you start a post asking for a recommendation and a message under the composer points you to a weekly thread, that automation is what you are seeing.

Communities also put the redirect in writing, as a rule that bans standalone recommendation posts or limits self-promotion to one weekly thread. The Crisis management article notes that a dedicated thread lets moderators "maintain your normal rules elsewhere, while being lax within your daily discussion thread and/or megathread." For a vendor, that cuts both ways. The megathread is the one place a product mention is welcome, and the same mention posted anywhere else gets removed. Reddit's self-promotion rule and the per-community variants in our guide to Reddit promotion rules cover the limits.

Where a recommendation question ends up
You post a recommendation question
A rule or Post & Comment Guidance points you to a thread
The question moves into the megathread
Product mentions are welcome there and removed elsewhere
The redirect keeps repeated questions in one place, and that place is where a vendor can answer.

How do you find a subreddit's megathread?

You find a subreddit's megathread at the top of the community, in the Community highlights carousel on reddit.com and the apps, or as a green sticky on old Reddit when the feed is sorted by Hot. If nothing is pinned, the community still has places that point to it.

  1. Open the community page and read the highlights carousel. Look for the Megathread label or titles like "Weekly," "Daily" or "Questions."
  2. On old Reddit, switch the sort to Hot. Stickies only sit at the top under that sort.
  3. Read the sidebar and rules. A rule that bans recommendation posts names the thread that takes them.
  4. Search inside the community. Reddit's search supports a title filter and a subreddit filter, so title:megathread subreddit:yoursubreddit returns posts with megathread in the title. Our list of Reddit search operators covers the rest of the syntax.
  5. For a recurring thread, sort the search by New, because last week's copy is the one at the top under Relevance.
  6. For scripts, call GET /r/{subreddit}/sticky, which Reddit's API reference describes as "Redirect to one of the posts stickied in the current subreddit." It returns 404 when nothing is stickied.

How do you watch a megathread for buyer questions?

You watch a megathread by opening it, switching the comment sort to New, and checking it on the same schedule the moderators post it. A megathread collects dozens or hundreds of top-level comments, and the default sort buries a question posted an hour ago under older, upvoted ones.

  • Read top-level comments only. In a questions megathread, each top-level comment is a separate person asking something, so treat each one as its own thread.
  • Track the new copy. A weekly thread is a new post every week. Bookmarking last week's URL means reading a thread nobody is posting in.
  • Reply in the thread, not by DM. The megathread is where the community allows the conversation. Reddiquette and most rule sets treat an unsolicited message about a public question as spam.

Manual checks have a ceiling. A community with a daily thread gives you seven new URLs a week, and a question asked at 2am sits unanswered until you open it. That is where keyword monitoring takes over from bookmarks.

How does RedReplier handle megathreads?

RedReplier watches every public subreddit for the keywords you set, and a comment inside a megathread is a comment in a public subreddit like any other. RedReplier puts each matching post and comment on your dashboard within minutes of it going live, and Reddit alerts go out by email as digests on a cadence you set per keyword, from hourly to daily. You do not need to know which thread is this week's copy, because the match carries its source subreddit and thread.

Before that, RedReplier's subreddit suggestions flag communities that ban self-promotion or restrict it to a single weekly thread with an avoid badge and the exact rule behind it, so you know before you reply which communities keep product talk in a megathread. RedReplier drafts a reply for each match and never posts it for you. You read the thread, edit the draft and post it yourself.

Frequently asked questions

What does megathread mean on Reddit?

A megathread is one post that moderators pin to collect every discussion of a single topic. Reddit's moderator help calls it the community's "One True Source" for links and updates on that topic. Members comment in it instead of posting separately.

How many megathreads can a subreddit pin?

A subreddit can highlight up to six posts on reddit.com through Community highlights. Old Reddit allows two stickies, and those fill the first two slots of the carousel. Reddit's API sticky endpoint accepts a number between 1 and 2.

Why was my post removed and replaced with a link to a megathread?

The community sends that kind of post to a megathread, and a moderator or AutoModerator removed yours under that rule. Reddit's Post & Comment Guidance works earlier, while you write the post: its "Redirect content somewhere else" automation shows a message pointing you to the megathread before you submit. Post your question as a comment in the linked thread instead.

How do I find the weekly thread in a subreddit?

Check the highlights carousel at the top of the community first. If it is not pinned, search inside the community with title:weekly or the thread's usual title and sort by New, since each week's copy is a new post.

Can I promote my product in a megathread?

Only if the community's rules say so. Some communities run a weekly self-promotion thread where product mentions are allowed and remove them everywhere else. Read the rules and the megathread's opening post before you mention anything you sell.

Do megathreads show as pinned in my home feed?

No. Reddit says highlighted posts look the same as regular posts when you view them outside the community, such as on the home feed. The pin only shows when you open the community itself.

How long does a Reddit megathread stay pinned?

A topic megathread stays pinned while the event or issue lasts. A highlighted post sits in the carousel until a moderator removes it. A recurring megathread is posted again on a schedule, and each copy is a new post with a new URL.

How do recurring megathreads post themselves?

Moderators use Reddit's Scheduled and Recurring Posts feature, which repeats a post hourly, daily, weekly or monthly. The scheduler has a pin option, First pinned or Second pinned, that highlights each new copy as it goes live.

Should I message someone who asked a question in a megathread?

Reply in the thread instead. The megathread is where the community allows the conversation, and Reddiquette and most rule sets treat an unsolicited message about a public question as spam.

Does RedReplier monitor comments inside megathreads?

Yes. A comment inside a megathread is a comment in a public subreddit, so it matches your keywords like any other. The match carries its source subreddit and thread, so you do not need to know which copy is this week's. RedReplier drafts a reply and never posts it for you.
