Why Reddit Archived Posts Stop Taking Votes and Comments After Six MonthsWhy Reddit Archived Posts Stop Taking Votes and Comments After Six Months

TL;DR

8 min read

A Reddit post becomes archived six months after it goes up, and from then on nobody can vote on it or comment on it. The thread stays public and readable. Moderators control this with an "Archive posts" toggle in their mod tools, so a community that turns it off keeps old threads open. The API marks archived posts with an archived field set to true. When the thread you want to answer is archived, the fix is to find or start a fresh thread on the same question.

What are Reddit archived posts?

On Reddit, a post turns read-only once it is six months old, and Reddit archived posts accept no new votes and no new comments from anyone. Reddit's Community settings article states the rule in one line: with archiving on, "posts within your community will automatically be archived after six months. This means users will not be able to vote or comment on posts older than six months." If you land on an old thread and the comment box is missing, check the post date first.

Archiving freezes a thread, and it hides nothing. The post, its score and every existing comment stay public at the same URL. What stops is new activity. For anyone who watches Reddit for questions about their product, that one fact decides whether an old thread is a place to reply or only a place to read.

When does a Reddit post get archived?

A post gets archived when its age reaches six months, counted from the moment it was submitted. Reddit's current help centre gives the six-month figure, and Reddit's own open-source code, last pushed to the reddit-archive/reddit repository on 17 October 2017 and now marked archived on GitHub, gives the exact value. Its example.ini reads:

# age at which links/comments become "archived" and can no longer be voted on, replied to, or reported
ARCHIVE_AGE = 180 days

The check in r2/models/link.py is one comparison, self._age >= sr.archive_age, and sr is the subreddit. Each community carries its own archive_age, set to the global 180 days by default. That per-community value is why Reddit could later hand the decision to moderators.

The age check runs against the post, not the comment. The same file sets can_reply = not link_is_archived for comments, so a comment written yesterday on a five-month-old post becomes unreplyable along with the whole thread a month later. Read the date on the original post, not the date on the newest comment.

A person scrolls a phone showing a read-only discussion thread, representing an archived post that still allows reading but nothing else.

What can you still do on an archived post?

You can read an archived post and its comments, and almost nothing else. Voting and commenting are closed by Reddit's help centre. Moderator locking is closed in Reddit's 2017 code, which rejects a lock or unlock request on an archived post with a 400 Bad Request. Reporting is unclear. The 2017 code comment quoted above lists it among the closed actions, but the 2017 report handler, POST_report, has no archive check.

The 2017 code also shows the message a blocked reply returned. The TOO_OLD error in r2/lib/errors.py reads "that's a piece of history now; it's too late to reply to it." Reddit's help centre does not publish the wording today's apps show.

Editing is the open question. The 2017 edit handler, POST_editusertext, checks for an admin takedown and a length limit and has no archive check at all. Reddit's help centre does not say whether today's apps allow edits on archived content, so test on your own post before relying on it.

How do moderators turn archiving off?

Moderators turn archiving off with the "Archive posts" toggle, which Reddit's help centre places "in the Content & Contribution section of your mod tools." The Moderation Tools overview lists the same control as "Archive Posts - adjust the Archive posts setting for your community." The steps:

  1. Open the community you moderate and go to mod tools.
  2. Find the Content & Contribution section.
  3. Open the Archive posts setting.
  4. Switch the toggle off to keep old posts open, or on to archive posts after six months.

The help centre only describes the toggle's on state. It does not say whether switching it off reopens posts that were already archived. In the 2017 code, archived status was computed from the post's age on every request and never stored on the post, so a change to the community's archive age applied to old threads at once. Whether the modern toggle behaves the same way is not documented.

The practical upshot for anyone reading Reddit is that six months is a default, not a law. A community with archiving off keeps its years-old threads open to votes and replies, so check the thread itself before assuming it is closed.

How can you tell whether a Reddit post is archived?

Reddit marks an archived post with a small archive-box icon next to the post title, and hovering it shows the tooltip "Archived post." We confirmed this on 28 September 2026 on a July 2015 thread in r/announcements, where the page's post element carries an archived attribute alongside the icon. The vote arrows and the comment box are the other giveaway, since neither works.

Code sees the same state in a field. Reddit's 2017 JSON template sets "archived": not item.votable on both posts and comments, and Reddit's current Developer Platform documents an archived getter on its Post model described as "Whether the post is archived," plus an isArchived() method. Moderators get a third route: Reddit's AutoModerator documentation includes a past_archive_date check, under which "submissions will only trigger the rule if they are older than the archival date of 6 months."

A padlock sits on an old file cabinet, standing in for the difference between a locked thread and one closed by age alone.

How is an archived post different from a locked post?

An archived post closes because of its age, and a locked post closes because a moderator chose to close it. The two produce a similar result, a thread with no comment box, but they differ on votes and on who can still write. Reddit's Post Actions article says a lock "prevents new comments from being made by anyone who is not a moderator of the community or an administrator of Reddit," and that "community members can still vote." Archiving stops votes too, and stops everyone.

Reddit uses the archived state as a reference point elsewhere. Its help centre says promoted copies of a post "will be locked (similar to archived posts)," so ad engagement does not flow back to the original. And an archived post is a different thing from a missing one: if a thread has vanished instead of freezing, a moderator or its author took it down, which the guide to removed vs deleted on Reddit covers.

Why do archived threads matter when you monitor Reddit?

Archived threads matter because a Reddit thread can hold a Google position for months after it stops taking replies, which is the long shelf life behind the question of whether Reddit helps with SEO. A thread from last year can sit on page one for the query your buyers type, and you cannot add a word to it. The window to join a conversation is the six months after it starts, and the replies that get read are the early ones, while the original poster still checks the thread.

RedReplier is built around that window. It watches Reddit, X, Bluesky, Facebook and Hacker News for your keywords and ranks each match by buyer intent. Matches land on your RedReplier dashboard within minutes of a post or comment going live, and Reddit alerts go out by email as digests on a cadence you set per keyword, from hourly to daily. On the search side, Reddit SEO scans Google every week for your keywords and shows where each Reddit thread that mentions you sits in the results, with its live upvotes and comments. RedReplier never posts to Reddit automatically. It drafts a reply, and you review, edit and post it yourself.

A Reddit thread can rank in Google long after it stops taking new votes or comments.

What should you do when the thread you want to answer is archived?

Answer the same question in a thread that is still open. An archived thread tells you what people asked, how they phrased it and which answers they upvoted, and that is useful research even though you cannot reply. Use it this way:

  1. Copy the wording of the original question, since searchers reuse the same phrasing.
  2. Run that phrasing through Reddit search sorted by new, and look for a thread under six months old.
  3. If an open thread exists, reply there with the answer the archived thread was missing.
  4. If none exists, check the community's rules and Reddit's self-promotion rule before starting a new thread yourself.
  5. Do not message the original poster of the archived thread about your product. A cold pitch about a years-old post reads as spam.

For research that needs the full history of a thread, including comments deleted after they were collected, a Reddit data archive such as Arctic Shift holds posts and comments from 2005 onward. That is for reading the past. Replying is a job for threads that are still open.

Frequently asked questions

How long until a Reddit post is archived?

Six months after it was posted. Reddit's help centre gives the six-month figure, and Reddit's 2017 source code sets it as 180 days. A community whose moderators turned the Archive posts toggle off keeps its posts open past that point.

Can you comment on an archived Reddit post?

No. Reddit's help centre says users "will not be able to vote or comment on posts older than six months" when archiving is on. That covers replies to existing comments as well, because the age check runs against the original post.

Can you upvote or downvote an archived Reddit post?

No. Archiving closes voting along with comments, so the post's score freezes at whatever it was on the day the post was archived. Reddit's 2017 source rejected a vote on archived content with a 400 error.

Can moderators stop posts from being archived?

Yes. Moderators control an "Archive posts" toggle in the Content & Contribution section of their mod tools. With it on, posts archive after six months, and with it off, posts stay open to votes and comments past that point. Reddit does not say whether switching it off reopens posts that were already archived.

Can you edit an archived Reddit post?

Reddit's help centre does not say. Reddit's 2017 source code had no archive check in its edit handler, which let authors edit old posts in that version. Test on one of your own old posts before relying on either answer.

How do you check if a Reddit post is archived with the API?

Read the archived field on the post object, which is true once the post is archived. Reddit's Developer Platform exposes the same state through the archived getter and the isArchived() method on its Post model.

Does archiving hide or delete a Reddit post?

Archiving freezes a thread rather than hiding it. The post, its score, and every comment already there stay visible at the same URL. Only new activity stops, since nobody can add a vote or a comment after the six-month mark.

Can you report an archived Reddit post?

Reddit's help centre does not say. The example.ini comment in Reddit's 2017 source lists reporting with voting and replying as the actions that close at 180 days, but the 2017 report handler, POST_report, has no archive check. Check the report option on the post itself before relying on either answer.

Can a moderator lock or unlock an archived post?

No. Reddit's 2017 code rejects a lock or unlock request on an archived post with a 400 Bad Request, the same code path documented in the post's table. Once six months pass, the thread's lock state is frozen along with everything else.

Is an archived Reddit post the same as a deleted one?

An archived post stays on Reddit and simply stops taking new activity. A deleted or removed post is gone from view, taken down by a moderator or its own author, which is a different action entirely. If a thread has vanished rather than frozen, look at that removal, not at archiving.
