Google AI Overviews are generated summaries above the classic results, written from several indexed pages and linked to the sources behind them. Google says a page qualifies as a supporting link by being indexed and snippet-eligible, and that no extra markup or optimization exists. There is no AI Overviews opt-out: nosnippet blocks the input but kills your regular snippet too, and Search Console never separates AI Overview impressions from the rest of web search.

What are Google AI Overviews?

Google AI Overviews are generated summaries that Google Search places above the classic list of links, written from several indexed pages at once and carrying links out to the sources behind them. Google Search Central says they help people "get to the gist of a complicated topic or question more quickly, and provide a jumping off point to explore links to learn more" (AI features and your website, 10 December 2025). An overview is a block inside ordinary Search, so a page reaches one through the index that feeds the blue links.

When did AI Overviews roll out, and where do they run?

Google launched AI Overviews in the United States on 14 May 2024, when Elizabeth Reid, VP of Search, wrote that the feature would "begin rolling out to everyone in the U.S., with more countries coming soon" and reach "over a billion people by the end of the year". On 28 October 2024, Srinivasan Venkatachary, VP of Search Quality, announced the expansion to more than 100 countries and territories in six languages: English, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Portuguese and Spanish. Google's AI Overviews help page carries the live country and language list, checked 8 September 2026. Read it before assuming your market has them.

An AI Overview arrives unrequested on a normal results page, AI Mode is a separate mode the searcher opens, a featured snippet quotes one ranking page, and a knowledge panel prints entity facts from Google's Knowledge Graph. The controls over each differ just as much.

One column decides the planning. All three snippet-driven features answer to nosnippet, so the switch that keeps you out of a summary also strips the quoted passage you were winning in classic Search.

How does Google say sources are chosen for AI Overviews?

Google names one hard condition: "To be eligible to be shown as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet, fulfilling the Search technical requirements" (Search Central, 10 December 2025). The retrieval behind that is query fan-out, and the same page says both features "may use a 'query fan-out' technique" of "issuing multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources". Google adds that its models "identify more supporting web pages" while the answer is generated, which is how one summary credits several sites.

Google rules out special preparation: "There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary." Nothing there is a promise either, since the same page says meeting every requirement "doesn't mean that Google will crawl, index, or serve its content." How retrieval and citation work across engines belongs to answer engine optimization, which holds the terminology this page does not repeat.

Can you opt out of AI Overviews?

No control removes your pages from AI Overviews alone. Three robots directives limit what Google can use, and each costs you something in classic Search. Google's robots meta tag documentation (updated 24 March 2026) says nosnippet stops the text snippet and "will also prevent the content from being used as a direct input for AI Overviews and AI Mode". A max-snippet ceiling "will also limit how much of the content may be used as a direct input" for the same two features. The data-nosnippet attribute works at element level on span, div and section blocks.

Google-Extended is the control people reach for and the one that does not apply here. Google's crawler list (updated 14 July 2026) defines it as a token for managing whether crawled content "may be used for training future generations of Gemini models" and for grounding in Gemini Apps and Vertex AI, then states: "Google-Extended does not impact a site's inclusion in Google Search nor is it used as a ranking signal in Google Search." AI Overviews are a Search feature crawled by Googlebot, so disallowing Google-Extended moves your exposure in Gemini products and leaves AI Overview appearances untouched. The full bot map sits in the guide to AI crawler user agents.

How do you measure AI Overviews when Search Console does not break them out?

You measure AI Overviews by sampling results pages yourself, because Search Console folds them in with everything else. Google states that "sites appearing in AI features (such as AI Overviews and AI Mode) are included in the overall search traffic in Search Console", reported "in the Performance report, within the 'Web' search type". Google ships no AI Overviews search type, filter or dimension, so nothing in the report separates an impression from a summary and an impression from a ranked link. Promise nobody an AI Overviews dashboard built out of Search Console data.

What you can build is a presence rate from your own SERP checks.

AI Overview presence rate = (tracked queries showing an AI Overview) / (tracked queries checked) x 100

Check 240 tracked queries, find an overview on 96 of them, and the presence rate is 40 percent. Record whether your domain appears as a supporting link on each: cited on 12 of those 96 gives a 12.5 percent citation share. Run the same list on the same schedule, then read it beside Search Console rows where impressions held and clicks fell. The traffic argument and its published figures sit in the breakdown of zero-click search, and the passage-level competition an overview absorbs is covered under featured snippet.

What should a brand do about AI Overviews?

Write pages an overview can quote, then count the answers that name you instead of waiting for the click. One page answers one buyer question, and the first sentence under a heading matching that question names its subject in full and settles it.

Counting is the part teams skip, since the exposure lands where analytics cannot see it. LLM visibility tracking closes that gap for assistant answers: RedReplier tracks where ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini cite your brand, so AI search brand monitoring runs next to its monitoring of Reddit, X, Bluesky, Facebook and Hacker News in one place. You add a website and your keywords, and RedReplier surfaces mentions ranked by buying intent with an AI explanation of why each was flagged.

Frequently asked questions

No. A featured snippet lifts one passage from one ranking page and shows it with that page's link. An AI Overview generates new text from several pages and credits a set of supporting links. Both answer to nosnippet, so switching one off switches off the other.

Does blocking Google-Extended remove me from AI Overviews?

No. Google's crawler documentation (14 July 2026) says Google-Extended manages whether content "may be used for training future generations of Gemini models", and that it "does not impact a site's inclusion in Google Search". Use nosnippet or max-snippet to limit AI Overview input, and accept the cost in classic Search.

Can I see AI Overview impressions in Search Console?

Not separately. Google says AI feature data is "included in the overall search traffic in Search Console" inside the Performance report's "Web" search type, and ships no filter or dimension that isolates AI Overviews. Track presence with your own SERP checks instead.

No. Google says an overview shows only "when our systems determine that it is additive to classic Search". Presence moves with query type and country, so measure it on your own keyword list instead of adopting a published site-wide rate.

Do I need structured data or an llms.txt file to appear in AI Overviews?

No. Google Search Central states that "You don't need to create new machine readable files, AI text files, or markup to appear in these features", and that no special schema.org structured data is required. Structured data still earns rich results in classic Search, so keep it matched to the visible text.

Which crawler fetches pages for AI Overviews?

Googlebot. Google's AI features guidance says "robots.txt directives for Googlebot is the control for site owners to manage access to how their sites are crawled for Search", and AI Overviews sit inside Search. Google-Extended has no separate user agent string at all, since Google uses that token only as a control signal.

When did Google launch AI Overviews in the United States?

Google launched AI Overviews in the United States on 14 May 2024. Elizabeth Reid, VP of Search, wrote that the feature would "begin rolling out to everyone in the U.S., with more countries coming soon" and reach "over a billion people by the end of the year." The wider international rollout followed five months later.

nosnippet removes both at once. Google's robots meta tag documentation says nosnippet stops the text snippet in classic Search and "will also prevent the content from being used as a direct input for AI Overviews and AI Mode." No directive blocks one feature and leaves the other intact, so turning off AI Overview eligibility costs you the featured snippet too.

How is a knowledge panel different from an AI Overview?

A knowledge panel prints facts about a single entity from Google's Knowledge Graph, triggered when a query names that entity. Google says panels "are automatically generated," and a verified representative can claim one and suggest changes. An AI Overview instead generates new text from several indexed pages and offers no claim process at all.

How many countries and languages support AI Overviews?

Google expanded AI Overviews to more than 100 countries and territories on 28 October 2024, announced by Srinivasan Venkatachary, VP of Search Quality. The expansion covered six languages: English, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Portuguese and Spanish. Google's AI Overviews help page carries the current country and language list, so check it before assuming your market has them.
