What Outsiders See in a Reddit Private Subreddit, and How to Get InWhat Outsiders See in a Reddit Private Subreddit, and How to Get In

TL;DR

A private subreddit is a community that only moderator-approved members can view or take part in. Reddit has four community types, public, restricted, private and premium-only, and private is the only common type that hides posts from people who are not members. A non-member sees the community's name and description, and the description is the only one a private community shows. To get in, use the request to join button if the moderators turned it on, or send a modmail. Reddit's Public Content Policy says it does not make posts and comments in private communities publicly available, so no outside monitoring tool can read them.

What is a Reddit private subreddit?

Only members approved by moderators can read a Reddit private subreddit, so anyone outside the approved list sees its name and description and none of its posts or comments. Reddit's help article What are public, restricted, private, and premium-only communities? defines it in one sentence: "Only members of the community that are approved by moderators can view and participate in private communities." If the community you want to read is private, the only way in is through its moderators.

Private is a setting, not a kind of topic. Moderators pick it in their community settings, and the same subreddit can be public one year and private the next. What you see when you land on it depends on which type it is set to today.

How do public, restricted and private subreddits differ?

Public, restricted and private subreddits differ in who can read and who can post. Reddit lists four types in its help centre, and the fourth, premium-only, exists only on old Reddit.

TypeWho can viewWho can post and comment
Public"Anyone with a Reddit account"Anyone, subject to the community's rules and filters
Restricted"Anyone can view and vote"Approved members only for posts, comments or both, depending on the setting
PrivateApproved members onlyApproved members only
Premium-onlyReddit Premium members onlyReddit Premium members only, and "only available on old.reddit.com"

Reddit's How can I control how people find my community? article gives the moderator's view of the same three main types: public means "anyone can see and participate," restricted means "anyone can see, join, or vote in your community, but you control who posts and comments," and private means "only people you approve can see and participate in your community."

The difference matters for anyone reading Reddit for leads. A restricted subreddit is still readable, so its questions are visible even when you cannot answer them. A private subreddit hides the questions too. Our guide to what a subreddit is covers how the three types fit into the rest of Reddit.

What does a non-member see in a private subreddit?

A non-member sees the private subreddit's name and its description, and nothing posted inside it. Reddit's Community settings article says the description appears "in Reddit search results for your community, even if it's set to private," and adds: "If your community is private, this will be the only description users will be able to see."

That is why a private community's description carries a lot of weight. The same article tells moderators that "providing information on how to seek an invitation may be helpful," so read the description first. It is the one place a private community can tell outsiders how to get in, in 500 characters or fewer, with no formatting.

Private communities also turn some features off. The Community settings article notes that "videos aren't allowed in private or mature (18+) communities," and that "private and restricted communities won't be eligible for community achievements."

How do you request access to a private subreddit?

You request access to a private subreddit through its request to join button, or by sending its moderators a modmail when no button appears. The button only exists when moderators turn it on. Reddit's Community settings article says: "If your community is private, you can choose to accept requests to join. This will also provide a button for members to mod mail and you'll have the option to approve them."

Approval works through the approved users list. Reddit's moderator article on approved users says that in a private community, moderators "will need to add users to the approved users list to give them access." The steps from your side:

  1. Read the community description for instructions on how to ask.
  2. Click the request to join button if the community shows one.
  3. If it does not, open a modmail to the community's moderators.
  4. Explain in two or three sentences who you are and why you want to join.
  5. Wait for an answer, and do not send repeat requests.

Do not ask to join a private community in order to promote a product. Its moderators chose to keep it closed, and Reddit's self-promotion rule applies inside them like anywhere else.

One detail for privacy-minded readers: Reddit's What mods can't do article says moderators cannot know who joined a community, "if your community is private, you still can't see who has joined, but you can see invited users in your approved users list in mod tools."

The route into a private subreddit
Read the description
Click request to join
No button? Send a modmail
Moderators add you to the approved users list
Read and reply by hand
Every step runs through the moderators, so there is no way around them.

Can outside tools see posts in a private subreddit?

No. Posts and comments in a private subreddit are not visible to outside tools, including search engines, AI assistants and Reddit monitoring services. Reddit's Public Content Policy lists "posts and comments in quarantined or private communities" among the private data Reddit does not "license or make publicly available," and tells users they "can choose to participate in private communities, which are excluded from our data licensing arrangements."

That rules out every shortcut. A tool that claims to show you a private subreddit's posts without an approved member's account is either wrong about what it covers or reading through someone's membership. Neither belongs in a lead workflow, and our explainer on whether scraping Reddit is legal covers the wider limits on collecting Reddit data.

Can a subreddit switch between public and private?

Yes, but moderators have to ask Reddit first. Reddit's Changing your Community Type article says "updating Community Type settings requires a moderator to submit a request," covering public, restricted and private changes. Requests are "automatically approved for communities with fewer than 20,000 members or under 60 days old," and for larger communities "an admin will respond to Public/Restricted/Private requests via mod mail in under 24 hours."

One change skips the request. Moderators "can continue to instantly restrict posts and/or comments for up to 7 days using Temporary Events without submitting a request." A community that blocks your comment for a few days while its posts stay visible is restricted or in that temporary mode, not private.

How does a private subreddit affect Reddit monitoring?

A private subreddit drops out of Reddit monitoring entirely, because nothing inside it is public. RedReplier's own FAQ describes its Reddit coverage as every public subreddit, which you can narrow to specific communities, and a private subreddit is not public. RedReplier draws the same line on Facebook, where it marks a private Group as one it cannot monitor and checks public Groups in full.

What RedReplier does cover is the public side, where questions are open to anyone who can answer them. Matches land on your RedReplier dashboard within minutes of a post or comment going live, and Reddit alerts go out by email as digests on a cadence you set per keyword, from hourly to daily. RedReplier drafts a reply for each match and never posts it for you. If you are an approved member of a private community, read it yourself and reply by hand, the way its members expect. Buying conversations that stay inside closed rooms are part of the dark funnel no tool can measure.

Frequently asked questions

What does private subreddit mean?

A private subreddit is a community that only members approved by its moderators can view and take part in. Everyone else sees its name and description. Moderators control the approved list.

Can you see posts in a private subreddit without joining?

No. Reddit's help centre says only approved members can view a private community, and its Public Content Policy says posts and comments in private communities are not made publicly available.

How do I join a private subreddit?

Click the request to join button if the moderators turned it on, which sends them a modmail. If there is no button, message the moderators directly and explain who you are and why you want to join.

What is the difference between a private and a restricted subreddit?

Anyone can view and vote in a restricted subreddit, and only approved members can post, comment or both. A private subreddit hides everything from non-members, so approved members are the only people who can even read it.

Can Google or AI tools index a private subreddit?

Reddit's Public Content Policy excludes posts and comments in private communities from what Reddit licenses or makes publicly available. Reddit's community settings show the description in search results even for a private community, and that description is all an outsider gets.

Why did a subreddit I follow go private?

Reddit does not publish a reason for each change. Moderators submit a request to change their community type, and Reddit approves smaller or newer communities automatically and reviews the rest within 24 hours. Read the community description, which is the one part a private community still shows outsiders.

Can moderators see who joined a private subreddit?

Reddit says moderators of a private community can't see who has joined. They can see invited users in the approved users list in mod tools.

The community can appear in Reddit search results with its description, even when it is set to private. Its posts and comments stay hidden. The description is the only text an outsider gets.

Can you post videos in a private subreddit?

Reddit's Community settings article says videos aren't allowed in private or mature (18+) communities. Private and restricted communities also aren't eligible for community achievements.

Does RedReplier monitor private subreddits?

RedReplier covers public subreddits, which you can narrow to specific communities. A private subreddit is not public, so its posts never reach your dashboard. If you are an approved member, read it yourself and reply by hand.
