Modmail is Reddit's shared inbox for a community's moderators, and Reddit says to use it instead of a direct chat when you need the mod team. You send it from the "Message the mods" link in the community sidebar on desktop, or from the overflow menu in the app, and replies arrive in your chat inbox labeled MOD. Reddit's spam policy tells unsure users to contact the moderators, which makes modmail the right place to ask whether a vendor reply is welcome. Keep the message short and specific, expect a slow answer, and do not send repeat messages: mods can mute you for 3, 7 or 28 days, or for good.

What is Reddit modmail?

Every subreddit has a shared inbox for its moderators, and Reddit modmail is the system you use to send a message to that whole mod team at once. Reddit's help article What's mod mail and how do I send a message? defines it as "a shared messaging system that moderators use to communicate with community members and other users," and adds: "If you need to contact a community's mod team, it's best to use mod mail instead of sending a direct chat message."

Use modmail any time your question is about a community's rules, a removal or a ban. A direct chat to one moderator reaches one person, and that person can be inactive. Modmail reaches everyone on the team, and the conversation stays on record for all of them.

Replies come back to your chat inbox. Reddit says responses to your modmail "can be found in your chat inbox labeled MOD next to the chat message."

How do you send modmail to a subreddit's moderators?

You send modmail from the community page, through the "Message the mods" link on desktop or the "Message moderators" option in the app. Reddit's How do I contact the moderators of a community? article gives these steps.

On reddit.com:

  1. Open the community page.
  2. In the right-hand sidebar, find the Moderators section.
  3. Click Message the mods, write your subject and message, and send it.

On iOS and Android:

  1. Go to the community.
  2. Tap the overflow menu at the top right of the screen.
  3. Tap Message moderators in the pop-up menu.

If you cannot see a moderator list, Reddit's Why can't I see the list of moderators? article gives three reasons: the community is private or restricted, where the list can be hidden from people who are not approved members; you are banned; or you are logged out. The same article says that if the community is unmoderated, the list is simply empty.

Why message the moderators before you promote anything?

Messaging the moderators before you promote is the step Reddit's own spam policy recommends when you are unsure what a community allows. Reddit's Spam policy says "community moderators adjudicate what constitutes unwanted/spammy content in their communities and may take action accordingly," then adds: "You may also contact the moderators of the community if you need additional clarifications."

That sentence is the whole case for modmail. Reddit's sitewide rules set a floor. Rule 2 of the Reddit Rules says "Abide by community rules. Participate authentically in communities where you have a personal interest, and do not spam or engage in disruptive behaviors (including content manipulation) that interfere with Reddit communities." Above that floor, each subreddit decides for itself whether a founder can answer a question with their own product, whether links are allowed, and whether vendors must use a weekly thread. Those decisions are not always in the sidebar. The mods know.

The spam policy also names the behaviour to avoid. It lists "Mass-posting repetitive content for the purpose of exposure or financial gain" and "sending large amounts of unsolicited chat or private messages" as violations, and it asks anyone whose contributions "consist primarily of links to a business that you run" to "be thoughtful about the frequency of posting." The Reddit self-promotion rule guide covers where the old 9:1 guideline came from and why it is no longer a sitewide rule.

What should a modmail to moderators say?

A good modmail to moderators states who you are, what you want to do, and the exact question you need answered, in a few sentences. Reddit's contact article asks you to "provide a clear and concise description of the issue, question, or concern" and to "Be respectful and provide any necessary details to help them understand the situation better."

For a vendor checking whether replies are welcome, that means three things:

  • Disclose the affiliation. Say you work on a product and name it.
  • Describe the reply, not the pitch. Explain that you want to answer questions where your product is relevant, and that each answer will stand on its own.
  • Ask one yes-or-no question. "Is that allowed here, and if so, are there rules on links?" is easy to answer. A paragraph about your company is not.

Here is a message that fits those rules:

Hi mods. I work on an invoicing tool for freelancers. People in this sub sometimes ask which invoicing tools handle multiple currencies, and I would like to answer those threads, disclose that I work on one option, and list the alternatives too. Is that allowed here? If yes, can I include a link, or should I name the product without one?

Then wait. Reddit's article says "you may not get a response right away. Depending on the size of the community, it can take a while for mods to get back to you." If you get no reply, treat that as a no and stay out of promotional replies in that subreddit.

How do moderators reply to modmail?

Moderators reply to modmail as themselves, as the subreddit, or with a private note only other mods see. Reddit's Sending mod mail messages article lists the three options. "Reply as myself" shows the moderator's username. "Reply as the subreddit" hides it, so "the message will be marked as coming from the community." A "Private Moderator Note" stays inside the mod team.

So the answer you get can come from the community's mod team rather than a named moderator, and the team can discuss your request in notes you never see. Moderators also have saved responses, predefined messages they can drop into a reply and edit, so a short, formal answer is not a personal brush-off.

What gets you muted in modmail?

Moderators mute users who send too many messages or harass them through modmail, and a mute blocks you from messaging that community's mod team. Reddit's What is mod mail muting? article says muting is for users "who may be excessively messaging or harassing them," and lists the terms:

DetailWhat Reddit says
Effect"Mod mail muting prevents a user from sending mod mail to the mod team of a community."
How you find out"If you're mod mail muted, you'll get a private message letting you know."
Length"3, 7, 28 days or permanent"
Scope"Muting only applies to the community you were muted in."

For a vendor, the practical rule is one message per question. Do not follow up the next day, do not argue with a no, and do not send the same pitch to the mods of ten communities at once, which also fits the spam policy's definition of unsolicited mass messaging.

When else should you use modmail?

You should use modmail for any question about a removal or a ban in a specific community, because Reddit routes those through modmail too. Reddit's Why can't I see my post? article says that if a moderator removed your post "by accident or unfairly, send them a mod mail message." The moderator list article says ban appeals go through modmail as well, and "You shouldn't send direct chat messages to mods concerning your ban."

If a reply of yours vanished, check whether it was removed or deleted first, using the guide to removed vs deleted on Reddit, and then ask the mods.

How does modmail fit into replying to Reddit threads by hand?

Modmail sets the terms once per community, and the replies themselves are the daily work. The order that keeps an account in good standing is to pick a handful of communities where your buyers ask questions, read each one's rules, ask the mods when the rules leave doubt, and then answer threads one at a time. Reddiquette and each subreddit's promotion rules still apply to every reply after the mods say yes.

RedReplier handles the finding part. Its subreddit suggestions rank communities by fit with what you sell and flag each community's posting rules, so you know which mod teams to ask before you write anything. After that, RedReplier watches Reddit, X, Bluesky, Facebook and Hacker News for your keywords and ranks each match by buyer intent. Matches land on your RedReplier dashboard within minutes of a post or comment going live, and email alerts go out as digests on a cadence you set per keyword, from hourly to daily. RedReplier drafts a reply for each match and never posts it for you. You check it against what the mods told you, edit it and post it from your own account.

Frequently asked questions

How do I message the moderators of a subreddit?

On reddit.com, open the community and click Message the mods in the Moderators section of the right-hand sidebar. In the iOS or Android app, open the community, tap the overflow menu at the top right and choose Message moderators. Replies arrive in your chat inbox labeled MOD.

Is modmail better than a direct chat to a moderator?

Yes. Reddit says it is best to contact a community's mod team through mod mail instead of a direct chat message. Modmail reaches the whole team, while a chat reaches one person, who can be inactive.

Can moderators see who sent a modmail?

Yes. Modmail goes from your account to the mod team, and Reddit documents no option to send it anonymously. Moderators, on the other hand, can reply as the subreddit, which hides their own username from you.

How long do moderators take to answer modmail?

Reddit sets no response time for moderators and says it can take a while depending on the size of the community. Send one clear message and wait. If no answer comes, treat it as a no for promotional replies in that subreddit.

What happens if you are muted in modmail?

A mute stops you from sending modmail to that community's mod team for 3, 7 or 28 days, or permanently. Reddit sends you a private message when it happens. The mute only applies to the community that muted you.

Should you ask the mods before every promotional reply?

No. Ask once per community, when the rules leave it unclear whether vendors can answer questions or post links. After the mods answer, follow what they said in each reply and keep your own content a small share of what you post there.

How do I appeal a ban from a subreddit?

Send modmail to that community's mod team. Reddit says ban appeals go through modmail and tells you not to send direct chat messages to mods about your ban. Keep the message clear, short and respectful.

Why can't I see the list of moderators in a subreddit?

Reddit gives three reasons: the community is private or restricted, where the list can be hidden from people who are not approved members; you are banned; or you are logged out. If the community is unmoderated, the list is simply empty.

Can I send the same modmail to several subreddits at once?

Not safely. Reddit's spam policy lists "sending large amounts of unsolicited chat or private messages" as a violation. Write one message per community, tied to that community's rules, and ask one question each time.

Should I say I work for the company when I message moderators?

Yes. Say you work on a product and name it, then explain that each answer you post will stand on its own. Finish with one yes-or-no question, such as whether links are allowed.
