TL;DR
7 min readFacebook group insights are an admin dashboard inside each group, opened from Manage and then Insights, that Meta's Help Centre splits into growth, engagement, membership and participants, guides and mentorship. Age and gender, top countries and top cities appear only in groups with at least 250 members, per-post reach and engagement need 250 members, and top posts need 50. Meta's article lists no date ranges and no export for group insights, and the dashboard covers only groups you admin, so it says nothing about the groups where your buyers talk and you hold no role.
What are Facebook group insights?
Inside every group they run, admins get Facebook group insights, a metrics dashboard that Meta's Help Centre defines in one line: "Group insights provide metrics about your group, including member activity and engagement within the group." The data covers your own group only. It describes how members join, post, comment and react, and it names the posts and people driving that activity.
Meta lists three uses for the dashboard in its article "View insights about a Facebook group you admin": understanding how members engage, seeing who the most active members are, and learning which posts have the most engagement. Each of those is a question about a community you already control. None of them is a question about a group you do not run, which matters for anyone using Facebook groups to find conversations rather than host them.
How do you open Facebook group insights?
You open group insights from the group's Manage menu, and some metrics appear only on a computer. Meta's article gives two steps:
- Go to facebook.com/groups and select your group.
- In the left menu, click Manage, then scroll down to Insights and select a metric.
Meta repeats the computer caveat twice in the same article: "Some metrics are only available from a computer." The one metric it names as computer-only is Membership requests, flagged "only available from a computer for now." Admins who check insights only from the Facebook app see a shorter list than the one below.

Which metrics do Facebook group insights include?
Facebook group insights include five metric groups: growth, engagement, membership and participants, guides, and mentorship. Meta's article lists each metric by name, with the conditions it attaches.
| Section | Metric | Condition Meta states |
|---|---|---|
| Growth | Total members | None |
| Growth | Membership requests | Computer only, "for now" |
| Engagement | Posts, comments, reactions | None |
| Engagement | Active members | None |
| Engagement | Popular days and popular times | None |
| Engagement | Top posts | 50 members, per the post insights article |
| Engagement | Top admins and moderators (by activity) | None |
| Engagement | List of group experts and their activity | None |
| Membership and participants | Top contributors | None |
| Membership and participants | Age and gender | At least 250 members |
| Membership and participants | Top countries | At least 250 members |
| Membership and participants | Top cities | At least 250 members |
| Guides | Guides and posts completed, breakdown by unit | Guides enabled in the group |
| Mentorship | Mentorship metrics | Mentorship enabled in the group |
Popular days and popular times show when members are active in the group. Top contributors and the experts list show which members carry the conversation.
How many members does a group need for insights?
Meta's articles set two member thresholds inside Facebook group insights, 50 and 250, and state no minimum for the dashboard as a whole. The 250-member line covers demographics: age and gender, top countries and top cities each carry the note "available in groups with at least 250 members." The 50-member line comes from a second article, on post insights: "If your group has at least 50 members, you can see insights for top posts in your group through group insights."
A 50-member minimum for the whole dashboard does not come from Meta's text. Meta ties 50 members to the top posts metric only. The main group insights article attaches no member count to total members, posts, comments, reactions, active members or popular times, and this page follows that article.
What do post insights show for a single group post?
Post insights show the reach and engagement of one post, and Meta limits them to groups with at least 250 members. Admins open them by going to the post and clicking View insights below it. Meta's article "View reach and engagement for a post in a Facebook group you admin" defines both numbers.
Reach is "The number of people who saw the post at least once (this metric is estimated). For public groups, this number includes both members and non-members."
Engagement is "The number of times members engaged with your post through reactions, comments, shares, photo or video views, and clicks." Meta adds that "Care" reactions are counted as "Likes."
Two limits follow from that article. Reach is an estimate, by Meta's own label. History is short too. Meta states that "post insights are only available for posts made after post insights became available in your group," so a group that crosses 250 members gets no reach figures for posts published before that point.
Smaller groups get a different signal. Meta's article on post views states that in a group with fewer than 250 people and without anonymous participation turned on, "anyone who can view the group can see the names of the members who have seen a post" through Seen by. Above 250 members, or with anonymous participation on, admins see a count instead of names.
What time ranges and exports do group insights offer?
Meta's Help Centre article on group insights names no time ranges and no export, so neither has a documented answer from Meta. The article lists metrics and the conditions on them and stops there. It does not state how far back the charts go, which date ranges an admin picks from, or whether the data downloads.

Facebook Pages get a different treatment. The Help Centre's Insights topic for Pages includes an article titled "Export your Page's insights data," and no matching article exists for groups. Any guide quoting a specific date range or a group insights export is describing what its author saw in the interface, not something Meta documents. Check the dashboard in your own group before relying on a range.
Third-party tools fill none of the gap. Meta removed the Groups API from every Graph API version on 22 April 2024, as set out in the Facebook Groups API deprecation, so group insights live only inside Facebook's own interface.
Who can see Facebook group insights?
Group admins see Facebook group insights, and Meta's articles describe no access for members or visitors. Every article on the subject is written for "a Facebook group you admin," and the main article frames the dashboard as something "Admins can use." Meta's group insights article names moderators only inside the metric "Top admins and moderators (by activity)" and says nothing about whether moderators can open the dashboard, so this page makes no claim either way about their access.
The admin-only design shapes what insights measure. They describe your community from the inside, with names, demographics and per-post reach. They do not describe any other group, and they stop at the edge of the groups you run. A brand comparing a Facebook Page vs a group gets insights on both only if it owns both.

What can't group insights tell you about other groups?
Group insights tell you nothing about groups you do not admin, and those are the groups a brand watches for buyer questions. A founder whose customers ask for recommendations in fifty industry groups gets no insights from any of them, no top posts, no popular times and no list of active members.
RedReplier covers that side from outside the group, with a different kind of data. RedReplier watches up to 50 public Facebook Groups per workspace, added by URL or Group id, with no admin or moderator role needed in any of them. Every new post in those Groups is checked against your keyword list, and each match is scored as high, medium or low intent. The Groups table shows, for each Group, when RedReplier last checked it and when the last post appeared, which is the activity signal that matters for choosing where to watch: a Group whose last post is weeks old is a slot to free for a busier one. Private Groups show posts to members only, so RedReplier marks them as unmonitorable. The Facebook social listening setup runs alongside Reddit, X, Bluesky and Hacker News in one ranked feed, and the guide to monitoring Facebook Groups for keywords covers the keyword list. For anyone weighing a full data pull instead, whether you need a Facebook Group scraper sets out the trade-offs.
Frequently asked questions
Where are insights in a Facebook group?
Open the group from facebook.com/groups, click Manage in the left menu, then scroll down to Insights and select a metric. Some metrics, including Membership requests, appear only on a computer.
Why can't I see age and gender in my group insights?
Meta shows age and gender, top countries and top cities only in groups with at least 250 members. A smaller group sees the growth and engagement metrics without the demographic breakdown.
Do Facebook group insights need 50 members?
Meta ties the 50-member threshold to top posts only. Its main group insights article sets no minimum for the dashboard itself, and 250 members is the line for demographics and per-post reach.
Can moderators see Facebook group insights?
Meta's group insights article is written for admins and mentions moderators only as a metric, "Top admins and moderators (by activity)." It makes no statement on moderator access, so check the Manage menu in your own group.
Can you export Facebook group insights?
Meta's Help Centre documents an export for Page insights and none for group insights. The group insights article lists metrics only, with no export and no date ranges.
Can I see insights for a Facebook group I don't admin?
No. Group insights are an admin feature for your own group. For public groups you do not run, a monitoring tool such as RedReplier shows matched posts, their intent score and each Group's last post time, not Facebook's insights data.
Why are some group insights missing in the Facebook app?
Meta's article says "Some metrics are only available from a computer." Membership requests is the one it names, flagged "only available from a computer for now." Admins who check insights only from the app see a shorter list than the full dashboard.
What does reach mean in Facebook group post insights?
Meta defines reach as "The number of people who saw the post at least once (this metric is estimated)." For public groups, the number includes both members and non-members. Post insights need a group with at least 250 members.

Why do my older posts have no insights?
Meta states that "post insights are only available for posts made after post insights became available in your group." A group that crosses 250 members gets no reach figures for posts published before that point.
Can I see who viewed a post in a small Facebook group?
In a group with fewer than 250 people and without anonymous participation, Seen by shows the names of members who saw a post to anyone who can view the group. Above 250 members, or with anonymous participation on, admins see a count instead of names.
